Zhao Bichen worked as a bodyguard protecting traders and their goods when they travelled from Beijing to Ulan Bator in northern Mongolia. He was chosen for this task because he was a renowned scholar and martial artist. Despite protecting numerous expeditions, Zhao Bichen became famous because he did not lose a single client or their goods, due to his mastery of Eagle Claw technique (鹰爪功 – Ying Zhao Gong) which gave him extraordinary gripping power. One day a cat burglar challenged Zhao Bichen to a martial arts dual, and Master Zhao replied: ‘You are on the wrong path when you deceptively enter other people’s home and do not possess the virtue to comprehend my martial ability. I will move in such a manner that you will be confused - facing East when you think that you are facing West.’ With that Zhao Bichen moved his hands in such a fast, co-ordinated and aligned manner that the cat burglar was struck down before he had a chance to move. The incident was both quick and neat with no anger, and yet the cat burglar could not comprehend what had happened, as each strike and multiple strikes found their mark. The great martial artist named Du Xinwu (杜心五) heard about the martial prowess of Zhao Bichen and made a special trip to challenge him to a fight. When the two met, Du Xinwu extended his hand to Zhao Bichen with a smile, and asked Master Zhao to apply his famous claw technique to it. Initially Zhao Bichen ignored Du Xinwu because he was elderly and had a thin body, but he soon had to avoid a number of well-directed blows which he did easily. However, when Zhao Bichen tried to ‘grip’ Du Xinwu, it was as if Du Xinwu’s body was as soft as cotton-wool and no purchase could be made. Du Xinwu possessed excellent evasive skills and could not be cornered or trapped, and his hand techniques floated like clouds through the sky and were as fluid as flowing water. However, as both masters were equally matched in martial skill, neither one could land a blow on the other, and so it was decided that the contest was a draw – and both masters shook hands out of respect for one another. From that moment onwards Zhao Bichen and Du Xinwu became very good and close friends.
