Daoism: How to Build Primordial Qi Energy
Building qi (气) energy is a very important and fundamental aspect of philosophical Daoist self-cultivation that develops health and prolongs life. The following points are guidelines for effective Daoist practice that strengthens qi energy:
1) Cultivating Primordial Qi Energy
Primordial qi energy is the essence of a long and healthy life. It cannot be cultivated or sustained through living a worldly lifestyle, as such a lifestyle inhibits qi energy flow throughout the body and causes injury and disease. The worldly lifestyle must be abandoned so that the mind becomes calm and peaceful and primordial qi energy can be developed.
2) A Still and Calm Mind Allows Qi Energy to Flow
If the brain can be kept quiet and calm for about half an hour to one hour per day, this practice will greatly benefit the cells of the brain. This is because there is a recognised link between the ‘mood’ in the brain (or ‘mind’) and that of the physiological state of the body. This reduces the generation and absorption of disruptive ‘hot’ qi energy into the mind and body. When the brain is quiet and calm, the musculature is relaxed throughout the body. This facilitates the smooth flow of blood and transportation of qi energy throughout the body. When this happens, the state of a ‘calm and still mind that ensures a permanently peaceful and ancient spirit that does not regress’ is attained.
3) A Peaceful Mind Equals Harmonious Qi Energy Flow
It is believed that lust is directly linked to the inner organs. For instance, excessive anger causes damage in the lungs through congestion. Too much commotion in the environment leads to a lack of concentrated qi energy flow throughout the mind and body (which becomes scattered and weak). A calm mind and fluid qi energy circulation throughout the body harmonises the flow of yin and yang, and the six pulses. This eradicates all sicknesses and illnesses.
4) A Spacious Stomach Equals the Absorption Yang Qi Energy
Human beings rely upon their stomachs to digest and absorb nutrients. It is very important that a spacious stomach is used to absorb yang qi energy. This means do not over-eat, and do not partake in the excessive use of alcohol or tobacco. A stomach that is not functioning correctly through poor diet or a self-indulgent lifestyle, leads to a deficient qi energy flow, and prevents a strong blood flow throughout the body.
5) Emitting Sound Equals Comfortable Qi Energy Flow
When there is an emitting of a sound through the mouth, then the nose, throat and abdominal areas are stimulated and massaged. After eating food and drinking tea, it is important to take a leisurely stroll in the courtyard and take-in the scenery, whilst emitting a sound through the voice – which may be the reciting of poetry – or the humming or singing a song. This creates a relaxed state of body and mind, and eliminates distractions, for the attainment of a very peaceful and profound state of being.
