Beijing Academics Visit Zhao Ming Wang
Original Chinese Language Article By: Qianfeng Daoist Master Zhao Ming Wang (赵明旺)
(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
Teachers and students of Beijing’s Qinghua University visited Zhao Ming Wang at his home (the Qianfeng Hermitage) in Yangfang Town, which is in the Changping District of Beijing. This is the place where the Qianfeng Prenatal School has its headquarters and is the epicentre of Qianfeng learning.
Zhao Ming Wang explained the lineage history of the Qianfeng tradition, stating that it has its roots in the Dragon Gate Branch of the Quanzhen School. He explained that it is premised upon the accumulated wisdom of thousands of years of research carried-out in China, and that it specialises in building health in the mind and body, and in so doing, has the effect of prolonging the lifespan. This is important as many people in China are suffering all kinds of illnesses and ailments when they reach middle age because they have not been taking care of their health whilst young. This has led in many cases to early deaths. The meeting place had an intense atmosphere associated with it as Zhao Ming Wang vividly explained in great detail all the facts regarding Daoist practice to a very receptive academic audience.
Also present were a number of Qianfeng disciples who gave personal accounts of their training experiences under Zhao Ming Wang. One of these disciples explained how they had contracted two types of cancer, and stated that after training in the Qianfeng School they had experienced positive changes in their body – both internally and externally. Master Zhao then explained that Qianfeng Daoism is not only popular in China, but is also becoming well known in the West. Recently, eminent academic Dr Zhang Qingsong (President of the International [Chinese] Wisdom Society) visited the Qianfeng Hermitage with Professor Howard C. Nusbaum - the Director of the Cognitive and Social Neuroscience Center, University of Chicago – and the President of the University of Chicago’s Study of Wisdom Program (which is funded by the John Templeton Foundation). He discussed the concept of wisdom with Master Zhao, and explored how as a distinct subject, Chinese Daoist health teachings could be applied to Western culture. This stemmed from a broader debate regarding the existence of wisdom in all human groupings that had overtime given rise to unique cultural formations. It was agreed that further debate should occur as a means to explore the cultural health wisdoms of China and the USA, and ascertain how these two distinct entities could possibly interact in such a way that improves the health of the world community.
Thousands of years ago the ancestors of China developed a science of health that has survived down to today. This approach to well-being emphasises building a strong and healthy body, and in so doing securing a great insight of mind and a longer life-span. It is believed that Daoist health can provide an interactive link between East and West, and provide Westerners with a new avenue to explore with regard to securing their own health and longevity. It is time to let the world know about Chinese Daoist teachings!
Zhao Ming Wang further stated that students can use their status to sharpen all the faculties of their mind and make their understanding and reasoning very strong. In this way they can understand things better, and generate profound thoughts. They can also build the health of their bodies and minds (through Daoist self-cultivation) so that they possess optimum energy for advanced thinking.
Master Zhao finished by stating that as even Western universities were now interested in Daoist training, Chinese universities should also encourage Daoist self-cultivation as part of their study programme. This is because a fully functioning mind can only function as such if the body it inhabits is strong both inwardly and outwardly. Wisdom is the ability of a healthy mind to think clearly and deeply about whatever subject is at hand. The concept of ‘international’ and ‘national’ health should be mediated through Daoist self-cultivation so that the world can benefit from its teachings and assist in its preservation and practice.
