The Mysterious Daoist Method of Raising Yang Energy
Original Chinese Language Article By: Qianfeng Daoist Master Zhao Ming Wang (赵明旺)
(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
Those who dedicate themselves to authentic Daoist self-cultivation, must refine their ‘essential nature’ (精 – Jing), and qi (气) energies. This training process occurs in the mind and body, and is the method of increasing the quality and quantity of both ‘jing’ and ‘qi’. This is the only genuine gate-way to effective Daoist self-cultivation.
Within modern China today, the market is saturated with all kinds of healthcare (and similar) products of varying degrees of effectiveness. Many ordinary people blindly flitter from one product to the next, with only a ‘vague’ idea of what they are doing. There is in operation a ‘blind faith’ regarding personal health and vitality. This is because many people are trying to boost their ‘jing’ and qi energy levels by using artificial means in the form of pills, lotions and potions, etc. Even if these are used as an aphrodisiac, the positive effects are short-lived, and tends to cause more harm than good in the long-run. Jing energy may appear to be ‘invigorated’ by such means, but in the end this turns-out to be only temporary, leaving the jing energy in a worse state than before. Why is this? It is because natural practice is far more effective than artificial stimulation? Why are artificial means detrimental? It is because the inner integrity of the mind and body has not yet been strengthened through virtuous self-cultivation. Taking artificial stimulants is often motivated by a non-virtuous mind, and this non-reliance upon the pristine purity of virtue, is detrimental at the cellular level of the body (and beyond).
I was with friends recently, and I heard how one of the men present used to be strong and sturdy. However, he had set himself a two-year time-scale to work hard and join the ranks of the wealthy, but in reality, he was unable to achieve this objective. The effort had diminished his jing and qi energy, and he had lost all his youthful vigour. Interestingly, despite how strong men may appear to be, their jing and qi energy systems are in fact finely balanced, and can be easily disrupted and diminished. Modern working conditions, coupled with the pursuance of all kinds of pointless entertainments, often leaves a man of just 30 years old unable to function properly within a relationship. As modern living is all about quick fixes – many of these artificial stimulants not only cost large amounts of money, but are designed as a temporary measure to ‘save face’. These artificial stimulants work by exhausting the jing and qi energy that is left, but do not ‘add’ any vitality to the human body or its functioning. This is why artificial stimulants can be very dangerous in the long-run, and are not worth the money or the long-term risk to one’s health.
A man has a particular model to follow in society. He wishes to start a family and build a harmonious family environment that nurtures growth and general positivity, but the stresses involved in the modern work-place often serve to pull the man in two directions at once. The working environment pulls the man away from the house, whilst the responsibilities of a married-person can pull the man away from the obligations of the work-place. This means that by the age of 40 years old, the jing and qi energy are greatly diminished, and by 50 years of age, both are nearly exhausted. In fact, even in the ancient Daoist ‘classical’ texts, it is recorded that when a man reaches 40 or 50 years of age, his jing and qi energy is often reduced simply by the rigours associated with living a long-life. In these modern times, this ‘natural’ (and easily repairable) diminishing of jing and qi energy is severely compounded by the stresses of modern living and modern working. If a man is unable to keep his jing and qi energy in harmony, he cannot effectively co-ordinate his external life (as his mind and body are in disagreement). This means that the harmony of the family home is lost, and discontent arises between husband and wife, whilst in the work-place the mind and body cannot be effectively directed to perform the job at hand. How can this embarrassing situation be avoided or rectified? The answer is in the practice of authentic Daoist self-cultivation, as a means to clearly isolate and repair the jing energy and the qi energy. This is achieved through the methods associated with the philosophical Daoism method known as the ‘essence of life mind-body’ (性命双修 – Xing Ming Shuang Xiu) self-cultivation. This practice builds jing and qi energy so that the health of the mind and body becomes ‘robust’, and life-expectancy is increased. This practice was developed centuries ago by the ancient sages, who carefully formulated all the authentic Daoist practises passed-on within legitimate Daoist lineages today.
Through the practice of ‘Xing Ming Shuang Xiu’ self-cultivation, the jing and qi energy is made clearly discernible in the mind and body so that there is no confusion between these two different but related substances. When these substances are clearly defined, they can be effectively circulated and strengthened. This process is transformative, and leads to a strengthened ‘spirit’ (神 – Shen), or ‘mind’, the inherent awareness of which automatically becomes ‘peaceful’ and all-embracing. However, jing and qi presence and circulation can only be correctly discerned if the surface activity of the mind can be ‘stilled’, and its ‘empty’ nature becomes fully ‘reflective’ of all phenomena. Of course, the Qianfeng Pre-Natal School uses a balance of both ‘internal’ and ‘external’ methods as part of its over-all teaching method. Sweating Ox (汗牛 -Han Niu) is a central exercise, which is augmented by 18 steps and 6 steps of Daoist self-cultivation (the 18 steps are elaborations of the foundational 6 steps). Sweating Ox practice is the principle exercise for repairing jing and qi energy. Followed by the 6 steps and their 18 elaborations. All this co-ordinated ‘external’ and ‘internal’ Daoist self-cultivation leads to the strengthening of inherent yang energy.
