Translated By Adrian Chan-Wyles (PhD) for Educational Purposes
1) Love your Homeland – Respect Nature.
i) Practice your Spiritual Path correctly.
ii) Abide by all Laws and Regulations.
iii) Cultivate a firm Understanding.
iv) Pursue the Correct Path.
v) Uphold Social Ethics and Morality.
vi) Walk in the Way of the Spirit.
vii) Cultivate "Compassion, Frugality, and Acceptance".
2) Excel in the Self-Cultivation of the Excellent Daoist Tradition during the morning and the evening.
Taking the Three ‘Pure’ Refuges:
a) Take Refuge in the Body of the ‘Grand Venerable Sovereign’ (Taishang) who Embodies the ‘Limitless Ridgepole’ (Wuji) of the ‘Great Dao’ (Dadao). Forever transcend Reincarnation and acquire the Treasure of the Way (Daobao).
b) Take Refuge in the Spirit of the ‘Venerable Scriptures that comprise the Thirty-Six Divisions’ and learn the True Law (Zhengfa). This is termed acquiring of the ‘Classic Treasure’ (Jingbao).
c) Take Refuge in the Life (Fate) of the ‘Great Law [Dafa] Master Xuan Zhong’ – and in so doing prevent falling into False Views. This is termed acquiring the ‘Master Treasure’ (Shibao).
Observe the Five Precepts:
i) Do not Kill or cause to Kill.
ii) Do not Steal or cause to Steal.
iii) Do not Engage in any form of Sexual Misconduct.
iv) Do not Drink Alcohol.
vi) Do not Lie, Gossip or Spread False Information.
3) Study (and/or regularly recite) the following Daoist Scriptures (amongst others):
a) ‘Morning and Evening Self-Cultivation Classic’ (早晚功课经 – Zao Wan Gong Ke Jing)
b) ‘Three Scholar-Official Classic’ (三官经 – San Guan Jing)
c) ‘Big Dipper Classic’ (北斗经 – Bei Dou Jing)
d) ‘Way Virtue Classic’ (道德经 – Dao De Jing)
e) ‘Southern Brilliance Classic’ (南华经 – Nan Huan Jing)
f) ‘Grand Venerable Sovereign Consecration Record’ (太上感应篇 – Tai Shang Gan Ying Pian)
4) The Attire of Daoist Teachers and/or Clerics is Regulated by the Instructions contained in the text previously issued by the China Daoist Association entitled ‘Considerations Regulating the Dress of Daoist Teachers and Clerics’ (关于规范道教教职人员着装的意见 – Guan Yu Guī Fan Dao Jiao Jiao Zhí Ren Yuan Zhuo Zhuang De Yìjian).
5) When participating in Daoist activities – whether In isolation or in a group – always follow a Vegetarian Diet.
6) Regardless of Daoist School, Group or Association – practitioners must be honest and register their true marital status.
7) Daoist priests (of the Quanzhen Sect) must hold firmly to the traditional path of celibacy and vegetarianism (whilst growing the hair long and tying it properly in a top-knot - keeping the usual wide collar free and clearly visible) - as these clerics live within a temple environment. Daoist priests (of the Zhengyi Sect) must follow the appropriate rules and regulations – keeping the bodily behaviour upright and awe-inspiring at all times.
8) Religious activity must be correct and never endanger National Security. Genuine Daoist practice is retiring and never endangers (or disrupts) good public order. A Daoist Teacher (or Cleric) should never damage or endanger the health of the general public. Under no circumstances should the mind, body or environment be damaged by distorted, illegal or misled Daoist practice.
9) Genuine Daoist practitioners must never be involved in any activity involving (or encouraging) "Pornography, Gambling or Drugs".
10) The image of Daoism must be respected at all times. Do not drink alcohol or smoke in public - as a Daoist Teacher (or Cleric) always sets the best behavioural example.
11) Do not use any method (including the Internet) to generate conflict by spreading rumours, causing trouble and destroying the unity of the Daoist religious community.
12) A genuine Daoist practitioner is never a burden to the ordinary people and does not ask the general public for offerings of any kind.
13) Do not participate in any ordinary businesses - other than temple self-supporting activities. In the case of the latter – this type of business must be pure (non-exploitative) and premised upon sound Daoist morality.
14) Do not buy, sell, transfer, lease, or forge any type of Daoist Clerical Ordination Certificate, Daoist Blessing (or ‘Cursing’) Certificate, Daoist Precept Certificate or Daoist Purity or Talismanic object, etc.
15) Do not arbitrarily alter the Daoist tradition, school or lineage. Do not arbitrarily expel or welcome members without good reason. Do not arbitrarily alter the Daoist Law, methodology or technique. In this manner always ensure that the Daoist Teachings are kept pure and clean.
