(Translated by Adrian
Chan-Wyles PhD)
The French professor known in China as ‘Dai Si Bo’ visited
the former home of Zhao Bichen – and met the Zhao family lineage inheritor –
Zhao Ming Wang.
At 9:30am on the 31.10.2013, to the south of Yang Feng Town (in the Changping District of Beijing), two middle-aged men stood waiting at the roadside. One is Zhao Ming Wang (myself) the great grandson of Zhao Bichen – the founder of the Daojia, Longmen, Qianfeng School – whilst the other is the eminent scholar in wisdom studies, Dr Zhang Qingsong. They are waiting for an esteemed visitor who has travelled thousands of miles to visit the former abode of Zhao Bichen.
Soon, a taxi arrived at the roadside. We both moved together to greet the guest. This is the eminent French academic Professor ‘Dai Si Bo’ (Catherine Despeux) who is now nearly 70 years old. She is from the French National Academy of Sciences in Paris, and is the Head of Department of the Oriental Institute of Chinese Language and Culture, as well as being the Director of the French Ministry of Education’s Chinese Teachers Board of Examination. Professor Dai Si Bo spoke fluent Chinese as I stepped forward to shake-hands with her.
Professor Dai Si Bo is not an ordinary guest. This lady was the first Western academic to translate the manual entitled ‘Clear Explanations of Hygiene and Physiology’, which was written by Zhao Bichen, and she introduced it into the Western world. It was published in the French language in Paris in 1979. This French edition has been subsequently translated into many European languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian, amongst many others.
(See International Society of Wisdom: "Zhao Bichen Wisdom of Life Study Guide").
Therefore, Professor Dai Si Bo – through her 1979 translation of ‘Clear Explanations of Hygiene and Physiology’ – and Charles Luk through his 1970 translation of ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’, may be considered true international heroes in the spread of Zhao Bichen’s Daoist neidan work.
I expressed a very warm welcome to Professor Dai Si Bo on behalf of Zhao Bichen and the Zhao family ancestors, and thanked her for all the work she has done on behalf of the Qianfeng School of Daoist self-cultivation. Her work has been extremely influential in the spread of Qianfeng knowledge around the world, and has facilitated the spread of genuine knowledge regarding authentic neidan practice as taught by Zhao Bichen. This has assisted the preservation and spread of Zhao Bichen’s work throughout the West of Chinese Daoist health culture and practice, and I said that I hoped that Professor Dai Si Bo would visit my home often, as I considered her to be my sister. I discussed various neidan practices suitable for Professor Dai Si Bo’s health and medical condition.
I introduced Professor Dai Si Bo to Dr Zhang Qingsong, and she was very happy to meet him. She said that she was also very happy to meet a descendent of Zhao Bichen, and to know that his teaching had been preserved and passed on in China. I discussed a number of issues with Professor Dai Si Bo, and she asked specifically about female neidan practice. Dr Zhang Qingsong then explained about his ‘Zhao Bichen Life-force Wisdom Society’, and how it is introducing the work of Zhao Bichen to the world, and inviting eminent academics from the international community (2014) to visit the former abode of Zhao Bichen, and meet with Zhao Ming Wang. This is the pursuance of the idea that wisdom is an international and ever expanding phenomenon, and that in the case of world-wisdom, the Daoism of Zhao Bichen can play a major role in developing peace, understanding, and prosperity throughout the world.
