Disability and Daoist Self-Cultivation
Original Chinese Language Article By: Qianfeng Daoist Master Zhao Ming Wang (赵明旺)
(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
Today I was visited by Wang Weishang and his wife Li Xiuling from Beijing. They are both over 60 years old, and both are Disabled. These two people are extraordinary examples of perseverance, as with many Disabled people, life is often very hard and difficult in ways that ordinary people do not understand. In everything they have struggled to achieve in life, these people have had to strive ten times harder than the average person due to their Disability. I know this because this couple has repeatedly visited the Qianfeng Hermitage to enquire about Daoist self-cultivation techniques over the years. Their journey began in the early 1980’s, where they enthusiastically learned much about the Daoist self-cultivation arts of Taijiquan and Qigong. However, what they were both actually looking for was the correct philosophical Daoist techniques that build robust health and prolong life. Their search eventually led them to my home in Beijing where I accepted them as Qianfeng disciples.
Li Xiuling asked for her following experiences of Qianfeng Daoist training to be added to this blog entry:
‘I cannot explain how grateful we are to have been accepted and trained in the Qianfeng Prenatal School. We both offer our sincerest thanks to our Shifu – Master Zhao Ming Wang – whose compassion has allowed us to access authentic Daoist teaching. When we explained that we are Disabled people, and that our bodies do not function like other people, Master Zhao Ming Wang said that the Qianfeng Prenatal School does not discriminate, does not seek fame, and does not accept payment for tuition – as all may train freely. He said that his great grandfather – Zhao Bichen – the Founder of the Qianfeng Lineage ordered that all people must be allowed equal access to Daoist training without exception, because everyone can benefit in some way from its health-giving properties.’
Today, Ms Tian (a Confucian scholar) was also formally accepted as a disciple in the Qianfeng School along with Wang Weishang and Li Xiuling, whilst two existing Qianfeng Disciples – Tian Qi Zi and Tian Yin Gu – assisted with the ceremony.
