Daoist Diet of Avoiding Grains

Nature not only gave rise to human life, but also provided everything
it needed to survive. The birth of
nature was the birth of Daoism because of the Nameless – the Divine-sky and the
Broad –earth had their beginnings. The
Nameless is well known to be the Mother of all things. Daoist health and
longevity theory and practice was first developed by the ancient masters, and has
been built-up over thousands of years of observation and experimentation. This continuous study is considered
scientific in nature, and it has led to a body of knowledge (or ‘law’) that can
be practiced at home within a family environment, and which is designed to
ensure health and create the conditions for a long life.
Some people have said that whilst practicing the special Daoist diet of ‘Bi Gu’ (辟谷) – or ‘not eating grains’, they have lived for a year without having to eat or drink. Is this possible? In fact, Daoist self-cultivation is also known as ‘Hibernation Teaching’ (蛰藏 – Zhe Cang) activity. This is the technique of intense cultivation of essential nature (jing), vital force (qi), and spirit (shen). When it is bright, such as in the time of the Autumn Moon, a practitioner withdraws from the world and stores the resultant energy in the dantian – or lower energy centre (two inches below the navel). This is the qi point for gathering true yang – or positive energy. This point (or cavity) has both an internal and external element, therefore it can also gather external yin and yang energy. This is where the immortal foetus takes root, which is nourished with internal energy (see: Chapter 14 of Charles Luk’s Taoist Yoga), and becomes firmly fixed in the chamber. This requires a great effort that cannot be achieved in a single day. Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) achieved this state. He was the 11th generation descendent of the Dragon Gate (Longmen) School of Daoism – who then founded the Qianfeng Prenatal School (Forming the immortal foetus is returning to the pristine prenatal state which is non-thought, non-breath, non-pulse, and non-awareness of worldly existence). Zhao Bichen wrote the book entitled ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’, which explains clearly the Qianfeng method in 16 chapters divided into four sections of effort.
This is a very difficult path that takes dedicated time, diligence, and sincerity to achieve. The beginner most study each stage very carefully and practice correctly. When each step is mastered, only then can there be movement to the next stage. If this does not happen, then Daoist health and longevity exercises become non-effective. This is why there must be a face to face transmission from master to student. From the first step of compressing the stove to form the cauldron - which opens the qi energy channels – to collecting the medicine… It is important to consider that genuine Daoist self-cultivation may take at least 9 years to complete, so that the surface is penetrated and true hard work can take effect. This requires a profound non-attachment to worldly affairs if cultivation of the Dao is to be successful.
