Value a Vigorous and Healthy Life

Sometimes, when I pick up my pen to write, the feeling of
compassion that I have is very great for contemporary society and its rapid
growth. Yes, every facet of life in
China has improved for the people, but with this material success, the attitude
of understanding toward essential nature (jing), and spirit (shen) has
diminished. Why are so many middle-aged
people in China dying young, or developing debilitating disease?
I have a personal experience of this. Not so long ago, a very close personal friend of mine had just celebrated his 45th birthday when he suddenly had a heart-attack and died. This loss caused me to think for a long time. He was a very intelligent and successful person. He progressed from a laid-off worker who experienced wind and rain, he worked diligently and became very successful through his many and varied business ventures. He was considered something of a strong psychological and physical powerhouse living amongst us.
Whenever I got the chance to talk to him, he would always tell me that he was immensely busy with little or no time for anything else outside of work. With a forced smile, he would sometimes say that he occasionally visited a karaoke bar, right? He clarified this by explaining that he did not want to actually go to these places, but had to go for business reasons. As I was concerned for his well-being, one day I gave him a copy of a Daoist self-cultivation book about longevity and good health, but he said that he did not want it as he had no time to study it.
My advice is this; even if you have to work hard to make a living, you must spend some time of the day dedicated to taking care of the health of your mind and body. If you do not do this, all will be lost and you will own nothing, not even your body. The body can only be owned through good health – do not relinquish its ownership through an early and preventable death. Good health must come before material profit, because without good health no material profit can be earned through work. However, you should practice the Daoist exercises associated with building health and longevity – this in itself is a profound accumulation of non-material wealth. I sincerely advise this as good health and a long life are the only true happiness worth having. You cannot achieve anything if you are not alive and well.
