Two Elderly Daoist Masters Visit Zhao Bichen’s Home

Memories of Zhao Bichen’s disciple Liu Zhongsan (刘仲三) and his study of martial arts and Daoist self-cultivation.
Early 2013 saw the publication of ‘The Wisdom Study Research Guide of the Life of Zhao Bichen.’ The International Chinese Wisdom Society made the observation that more research was needed into the origins of the Qianfeng Prenatal School and the life experiences of Zhao Bichen. This work is already underway in 2013 with the Wisdom Society releasing information of how Zhao Bichen’s internal energy centre cultivation (内丹 - Nei Dan) and Immortality self-cultivation (功法 - Gong Fa) techniques have spread and developed outside of China. Recently the study of the history of Qianfeng Daoism within China has also advanced, as Zhao Bichen is considered the initiator of the wisdom studies project (due to his study of Western medical knowledge and its integration with traditional Daoist terminology).
On July the 28th, 2013, the Qianfeng Hermitage of Zhao Bichen (which is situated in Yang Fang Town in northwest Beijing) paid host to two Daoist practitioners who were over 80 years of age. They were both longterm disciples of Liu Zhongsan (刘仲三) – also known as Liu Zhenbing (刘振邦) – both were former disciples of Zhao Bichen. One disciple was the Daoist Cultivation (道功 - Dao Gong) lineage inheritor named Chen (陈), and the other disciple was the Martial Cultivation (武功 - Wu Gong) lineage inheritor named Fu Liangcai (付良才) and they were accompanied by their disciple Shifu Wang (王师傅). Also present was myself - Zhao Ming Wang (the great grandson of Zhao Bichen and the Zhao Family Qianfeng lineage inheritor) - and Dr Zhang Qingsong (张庆松) the President of the American Society of Chinese Wisdom – who talked together with the two elderly Daoist masters and their disciple for five hours.
The two elderly gentlemen recalled their memories of Liu Zhongsan and what it was like to train in Daoist and martial self-cultivation. First, however, they clarified that although Liu Zhongsan was recognised as the ‘first’ great martial arts disciple of Zhao Bichen (as he was the first disciple accepted by Zhao Bichen to study martial arts) in fact Zhao Bichen sent him to train directly with his own martial arts teacher named Shifu Liu Yunpu (刘云普). Liu Zhongsan also trained in ‘Natural Gate Martial cultivation’ (自然门武功 – Zi Ran Men Wu Gong) under Master Du Xinwu (杜心五) after Zhao Bichen recommended him. As for Liu Zhongsan’s training in the Daoist self-cultivation, Zhao Bichen taught him exactly the path contained in his manual entitled ‘'The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’ (性命法诀明指 – Xing Ming Fa Jue Ming Zhi).
It was during 1946 that the two elderly gentlemen became formal disciples of Liu Zhongsan within the Loving Kindness Temple (慈恩寺 – Ci En Si) which is situated in the Haidian District of Beijing (this temple still exists but is now in a dilapidated state). The two disciples trained in different ways and mastered different aspects of self-cultivation. Disciple Chen specialised in the practice of Martial Cultivation and Dao Cultivation, whilst Disciple Fu perfected Martial Cultivation. The power and efficacy of Zhao Bichen’s teaching can be clearly discerned in the bodies (and characters) of the two elderly Daoist masters.
The Venerable Shifu Chen spent decades perfecting the self-cultivation that builds good health and which prolongs life (and achieves Immortality). As a consequence his complexion was rosy, his body appeared ‘light’ like that of a sparrow (in flight) and he possessed an awe-inspiring deportment. When in conversation his speech was both impressive and quite brilliant. He said that since retiring 20 years ago he has never taken any medicine and has never had to seek any expensive medical treatment. In each 24 hour time period he only needs to sleep three to four hours. He said that through continuous practice he cultivated a ‘pure spirit (神 – Shen), so that throughout life disease never took root within a body free of tension.’ Zhao Bichen transmitted the Daoist self-cultivation teachings of the Qian Prenatal School by way of – ‘Complete Perfection (十全 – Shi Guan), Complete Beauty (十美 – Shi Mei) and Complete Fullness (十足 – Shi Zu)’.
The Venerable Shifu Fu appeared lean and capable. It was obvious that he had refined the essential nature (精 – Jing) and strengthened the spirit (神 – Shen) within. Although reserved, when we discussed martial arts he told us what it was like training with Liu Zhongsan in the tradition passed-on by Zhao Bichen. Shifu Fu demonstrated how he could suddenly manifest the demeanour of a martial arts master which was strong in spirit and full of powerful qi (气) energy. His body was like a compressed spring full of potential energy and his sword-eyes emitted rays of piercing light. Even his speech was strong like iron balls fired from the mouth. His words were strong and full of martial vigour. In early 2007, Shifu Fu was invited to visit Germany and France where many Westerners were impressed with his martial arts ability and skill.
The two Venerable Masters both talked about Liu Zhongsan and Zhao Bichen, revealing much information of historical importance. For instance the name of the Zhao Bichen’s body guarding service was called ‘To Meet in Friendship Professional Armed Escort’ (会友镖局 – Hui You Ming Zi). In fact so respected and feared was Zhao Bichen’s martial arts reputation that when one cart of goods was about to leave, instead of personally escorting it along the road, Zhao Bichen just simply placed his name banner on the cart and no one dared to interfere with it. Many more stories like this will appear in another article.
Both myself and Dr Zhang thanked the two old Masters for taking the time to visit and share their valuable knowledge with us. From the health of these two masters, and given their advanced years, it is obvious that they have benefitted greatly from the Qianfeng Prenatal training as developed by Zhao Bichen. Their obvious clarity of mind and physical power is testament to the effectiveness of this type of training. This proves Qianfeng Daoism is a valuable traditional resource for health and long life within the context of a modern society. It was also established that Zhao Bichen’s first generation of students are all probably in their 80’s or 90’s and that it was important to interview these people and record all the history they remember for the education of future generations. Shifu Wang also talked extensively about his experience of gong fa and Daoist self-cultivation, making additional valuable observations and other contributions. Although these two elderly masters were disciples of Qianfeng Daoist and martial self-cultivation, they remained humble and virtuous in their practice. They quietly concentrated on the teaching and spreading of the Qianfeng tradition. When we interviewed these two masters they always remained modest in their behaviour and aspirations. They were never arrogant and always deferred to myself when sharing their knowledge for the benefit of the Qianfeng tradition and future generations.
