This morning I paid a visit to the Mentougou area of western
Beijing to meet with Mr Hu. Mr Hu is a
prominent member of the Mentougou martial arts community. In recent years he has taken a very strong
interest in the life-preserving techniques found within Philosophical
Daoism. Mr Hu took the time to explain
to me about his interest in martial arts, and his lifelong experiences
associated with his practice. His
knowledge is extensive in this area, and he has many martial arts friends from
all over China. He has researched the
state of health of many practitioners who have spent 60 years or more
practicing and found that many suffered from various bodily ailments that
affected their quality of life. In fact,
the majority had various types of diseases due to a deficiency in qi
energy. After several years of martial
arts practice, he realised that the teachings of Daoism were very important for
the healthy maintenance of both the mind and the body. By studying the life-preserving and longevity
exercise of Philosophical Daoism, his martial arts practice improved, as did
his all-round quality of life.
We spent time exchanging our respective knowledge of martial
art practice and Daoist practice, and Mr Hu was of the opinion that the Daoist
aspect was very profound and subtle. It
was agreed that both spiritual and physical development was needed throughout a
life-long practice of martial arts, and that it was detrimental to health in
the long run to just focus on the physical aspect of training. Life-preserving practices were understood to
be the key to ensuring good health when the body got older. In the afternoon, I travelled to Nankouzhen
in northwest Beijing to meet with the old leaders there. In one of the homes was a ginseng root that
had been preserved in wine for over 40 years.
However, I saw with my own eyes that this root had suddenly blossomed. This event was confirmed by a Professor of
Agriculture – and certainly seems to be a miracle.
On the topic of martial arts training, it has to be
understood and accepted as a fact that Daoist life-preserving exercises
certainly prolong our life-expectancy.
One Daoist practitioner reached over 200 years of age, whilst another (who
was a monk) lived until 130 years of age.
