The Way of Goodness Cultivates the Dao

A genuine person benefits all in the world through a charitable disposition that assists the ordinary people by providing them with a peaceful life and good health. A corrupt person is the exact opposite and sows very bad karmic seeds that come to fruition by increasing the sum total of suffering in the world. The cultivation of the Dao depends entirely upon the cultivation of virtue. If you are virtuous, then you will naturally generate goodness in the world that will never end and have no limits to its transforming ability. Good thoughts generated in the mind create virtuous actions and harmonious conditions in the world. This means that the mountains and rivers are temperate and all omens are good. If you have only greed and hatred in your mind, then there will be no virtue and chaos and suffering will manifest in the world. A good and just path cultivates the Dao, whilst a false and corrupt path deviates away from the Dao. The former alleviates suffering whilst the latter increases suffering. Furthermore, pretending to be ‘good’ to deceive other people (when you have not cultivated your own inner being) will return bitter fruits to you. This is because you are pretending to possess insight you do not have. If others mistakenly follow you, then you will all meet with suffering and frustration in your self-cultivation. Be honest and virtuous and the Dao will manifest for all to see.
Philosophical Daoism cultivates the mind through the generation of good and virtuous thoughts and actions, as this avoids bad or evil rebirths, which no one wants to experience. The cultivation of the Dao (either within a temple or a family) requires exactly the same attention to detail. You must cultivate a robust good health and achieve longevity through the practice of authentic Daoist exercises taught by a qualified teacher. You can be a celibate priest or live as a married couple – either way anyone can benefit from genuine and committed Daoist self-cultivation that is dependent simply upon being good to yourself and to other people, as a means to develop virtue. Whether you train at home or in a temple, it is the job of the master to assist the disciple regardless of circumstance, and help you purify your essential essence so that enlightenment can be achieved. Only a true master who has inherited a genuine lineage can properly perform this task. What unites temple dwellers and lay-people is that it is exactly the same process of inner cultivation that must be pursued, which is entirely dependent upon the continuous generation of virtue. Through correct and virtuous self-cultivation, all things become attainable in the world. This is why your self-cultivation must be both powerful and exact so that all barriers are swept away in front of you. In the Dao De Jing it says that ‘goodness flows like water’ and cannot be stopped because it is absolutely consistent. How do you achieve this? By eradicating all the inconsistencies from your mind and body through self-cultivation exercises. Enlightenment is the realisation of an expansive and empty mind that contains all things. This is an expansive mind and purified body free of all distractions and polluting elements.
This is all dependent upon receiving instruction from a master who has inherited a genuine lineage and who has been taught correctly and has attained enlightenment. Only then can you understand what it means to strengthen your essential nature (jing), and cultivate your lower energy centre (dantian). The master who truly knows will explain all this to you as many times as you need, such is the depth of knowledge and understanding he or she possesses. As you breathe deeply into the lower energy centre (dantian) you will notice that the area will fill with vital force (qi) and that this will develop the essential nature (jing) through circulating the qi energy up the spine, over the top of head, down the front of the body and down under the groin area. This process continuously circulates the qi energy through the lower energy centre (dantian), which in turn invigorates the essential nature (jing). The qualified master will always assist in the opening of the qi energy channels in the body, and assist you with making your health better by releasing any qi energy blocks in the system. Energy that is blocked causes disease and prevents qi energy circulating freely through the qi energy channels spread throughout the body. Generally speaking, before you are able to open these channels yourself, the master will do this for you. This frees you to pursue your self-cultivation from a good and positive base. Traditional Daoist self-cultivation is an ancient art that is comprised of a lineage of wisdom and knowledge about the Dao that is handed-down from one generation to the next. You can assess the validity of what a master is saying by studying the ancient Daoist Classics before entrusting yourself into his or her care.
