Internal Gongfu Self-Cultivation Classes!
Original Chinese Language Text By Spring Dragon [春龙 – Chun Long] Martial Way [武道] Hall [堂]
(English Translation By Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
Translator’s Note: This is a direct translation of a relatively short (but technical) Chinese-language text regarding Qianfeng Daoist martial arts internal self-cultivation. The original title reads ‘Spring Dragon Martial Way Hall - Qianfeng Hermitage Internal Method Disciple – Daoist Foundation Gongfu Self-Cultivation’ (千峰草堂门内弟子及好道者基础功夫修炼基地——春龙武道堂) – although the text is short - the title is long. I have, therefore, shortened this title – but retained its meaning - for the convenience of the Western reader. Needless to say, within Chinese culture – every ideogram is essential, meaningful, and presented with the utmost respect. I retain this sense of respect whilst rendering the title suitable for translation (and transliteration) into another language. Oddly, the Chinese-language of this text states that Zhao Bichen passed away “around 1937”* – when in fact it is well-known in China that Zhao Bichen left his body during the year of 1942. Zhao Ming Wang has written extensively on this subject – directly quoting from family members and diaries covering this important event. Having checked with my advisor on this issue - it is confirmed that the original author has made an unintentional error of interpretation - due to a lack of familiarity with the sometimes complex historical texts. Spring Dragon Martial Way Hall – 6.8.2019
This Chinese way of health preservation and life extension (养生 – Yang Sheng) is the thousands-year-old secret method of energy-centre self-cultivation (丹道 – Dan Dao) – as developed by the Patriarch and Founder – Zhao Bichen (赵避尘). Zhao Bichen inherited the Dragon Gate (龙门 – Long Men) Thousand Peaks (千峰 – Qian Feng) Pre-Natal (先天 – Xian Tian) School of Philosophical Daoism – and today this school is preserved and transmitted by the great grandson of Zhao Bichen – namely Master Zhao Ming Wang (赵明旺). Zhao Ming Wang has inherited the Daoist School from Zhao Bichen – and strives with a heart full of compassion to save the people of the world from suffering. With an open-mind, Zhao Ming Wang spreads the teachings (and secret methods) of the Qianfeng School to anyone who requests the teaching. This is different to the old days – when only one or two predestined disciples would be taught. It is a self-strengthening blessing for the Chinese people – which encourages a healthy and long life.
The Qianfeng Pre-Natal School is an internal self-cultivation (内丹 – Nei Dan) lineage – which is distinct from many of the usual Daoist traditions – by teaching anyone who asks (providing they are respectful). The Qianfeng School was founded by Zhao Bichen - during the late Qing Dynasty. Zhao Bichen’s Daoist name was “Shun Yi Zi” (顺一子). Due to his diligence – he was known as the “Old Master” (老人 – Lao Ren) – and then as the “Qianfeng Old Master”. Zhao Bichen was born in the Changping County area of Beijing, around the 10th year of the reign of Emperor Xianfeng (咸丰) – that is 1860. Zhao Bichen suffered from blood in his stool during the early Emperor Guangxu (光绪) period (who reigned 1875-1908). When he was ill, he followed his grandmother to Peach Source Temple (桃源观 – Tao Yuan Guan) located in Qianfeng Mountain – where he received instruction as a disciple of Master Liu Mingrui (刘明瑞). It was at this time that Zhao Bichen was taught the genuine and true lineage of the South Nothingness (南无 – Na Mo) School of Daoist self-cultivation.

It was at this time that Zhao Bichen was taught the genuine and true lineage of the South Nothingness (南无 – Na Mo) School of Daoist self-cultivation.
3Later, (during the 3rd lunar month) of the 21st year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu (that is during April 1895 of the solar calendar) – Zhao Bichen travelled to Jinshan Temple (金山寺 – Jin Shan Si) – or “Gold Mountain Temple” - to pay his respects to (and train under) Ch’an Master Liao Kong (了空禅师 – Liao Kong Ch’an Shi). Zhao Bichen then inherited the complete internal method (and lineage) as transmitted by Liu Mingrui. During 1920, Zhao Bichen began to accept disciples and pass on his advanced Daoist skills - founding the Qianfeng (千峰) – or “Thousand Peaks” - School. Zhao Bichen passed away around 1937* - (the correct date is “1942”). Zhao Bichen authored the book entitled 'The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’ (性命法訣明旨 – Xing Ming Fa Jue Ming Zhi) – within which an adherent must begin training by focusing the attention on the “Zu Qiao” (祖窍) qi-energy point - situated between the eyebrows – whilst simultaneously extending the awareness to include the tip of the nose. The Qianfeng School integrates traditional Daoist teaching with the Ch’an (禅) School of Chinese Buddhism – and is considered to be the “Northern School of Pure and Still Self-Cultivation Law”( 北宗清静丹法 – Bei Zong Qing Jing Dan Fa).
The Qianfeng School is an authentic lineage of disciplined Daoist internal self-cultivation – passed on from one master to the next – with a clear methodology open to all beings. The inner self-cultivation method is genuine, and the master's teachings are clear - forming a reliable foundation for later disciples to study and learn. This is how the Qianfeng Hermitage has been teaching the genuine Daoist Law until the present day. As a consequence, there are many disciples in the Qianfeng School – both in China and abroad. Of course, as with any broad movement – the level of skill varies considerably. Master Zhao Ming Wang supports the initiative of the “Spring Dragon Martial Way Hall” – stating that:
“I sincerely hope that the students of the ‘Spring Dragon Martial Way Hall’ will correctly study the Qianfeng Daoist Gongfu (martial arts) internal self-cultivation method correctly. This organisation creates a positive environment for practicing self-cultivation – and we hereby approve the free classes that it offers.”
