Sexual Health: Eunuch – True and False
ORIGINAL CHINESE LANGUAGE ARTICLE BY: QIANFENG DAOIST MASTER ZHAO MING WANG (赵明旺)
(TRANSLATED BY ADRIAN CHAN-WYLES PHD)
For the average Chinese person alive today, the concept of a ‘Eunuch’ is associated with the past times of ancient dynasties. Since the founding of ‘New’ China (in 1949), the concept of a ‘Eunuch’ is now only seen in movies and TV documentaries that depict or discuss the past. In Beijing’s ‘Middle Gate Village’ (中关村 - Zhong Guan Cun), the tall and impressive ‘Eunuch’s Building’ is, in fact, one of the world’s most foremost technological park.
The title of this article has many meanings, each increasing with depth (similar to Daoist self-cultivation and the training adjustment that must take place as development occurs). It could mean ‘real’ or ‘fake’, or ‘existing’ and ‘empty’, etc. The point is that the old concept of the Eunuch has gone forever (because as a practice, it is primitive and cruel), meaning that the use of this term today is ‘virtual’, or even ‘ironic’.
One way the term ‘Eunuch’ is used in modern China is to describe the rapid decline in the sexual drive and sexual functionality of people aged 50 years old and above – as if by losing their sexual drive – they are losing their sexual organs! Of course, this is not the case in reality, but the problem can be very distressing to the individuals and couples. Incidents of broken relationships and people living alone has increased in recent years, which is considered a sad development.
An entire industry of ‘quick fix’ pills and potions has sprung-up to cater to this deficiency, but it is clear that most of these ‘cures’ are ineffective, or only work for a short-time. In fact, even when taking these herbs, the decline in sexual health eventually gets worse. The reasons for this sexual decline are as follows:
1) Modern society is developing at a rapid rate that uses-up far too much energy and physical exertion to meet the challenge.
2) There are many (and complex) issues surrounding diet and nutrition.
3) Excessive Sexual expectations coupled with a sense of worry about life expectancy.
A disturbing aspect of sexual decline is that it is beginning to manifest in men UNDER 50 years of age, to an ever-greater degree. The Daoist answer is that the body can repair and strengthen itself. This can be achieved by balancing the diet and engaging in Daoist self-cultivation techniques. This is a Chinese science developed over thousands of years that specializes in certain ’disciplined’ activities which preserve and strengthen various essential substances, the result of which leads to better health, and a prolonged life-expectancy.
