Qianfeng Daoism and Martial Arts Practice are Compatible

On October the 31st, 2014, a 62 year old person from the ancient capital of Xi’an visited the Qianfeng Hermitage (in Beijing) to discuss authentic Daoist self-cultivation. His name is Meng Wubin (孟武斌) and he is a 12th generation descendent disciple within the Xi’an Chen Family Style of Taijiquan (陈氏太极拳). In fact he is the Assistant Director of the Xi’an Chen Taijiquan Association.
I discovered that as a child (and throughout his adult life) Meng Wubin had been intensely interested in Chinese martial arts, and had dedicated his life to martial practice and perfection. He particularly favoured the practice of Taijiquan. He trained hard for decades, and although he is now 62 years of age, his body is muscular and his eyes sparkle. After our initial introduction and discussion, Meng Wubin then practiced Chen Taijiquan with me. He said that throughout his younger life there had been much hardship and difficulty, but he had never gave-up his martial practice. His body had never felt as good as it did now, and explained that a few years ago, he had received instruction in Daoist health-building, mind development and life prolonging (性命双修 – Xing Ming Shuang Xiu) exercises.
He went on to say that the body of knowledge that comprises Chinese Daoist self-cultivation techniques, is both broad and profound, and that he knew that throughout history, and during the dynasties of the past, it was quite common for well-known martial artists to also practice Daoist health-building and life prolonging techniques. This example has been followed even in modern times by such martial arts experts as Du Xinwu (杜心武), and Zhao Bichen (赵避尘). Both began as martial arts practitioners who eventually specialised in Daoist self-cultivation. As a result of this understanding, Meng Wubin had been searching for authentic Daoist self-cultivation techniques in and around the Xi’an area, and despite meeting with many Daoist masters, and being subjected to a number of different methods, exercises, medicines and meditations, he felt that he had not found what he was looking for.
Meng Wubin said that he had come to the Qianfeng Hermitage in Yang Fang Town to talk to me, as he had heard that our Daoist self-cultivation was genuine and not false. This is when I explained to him the Daoist path in exact detail, leaving nothing out. He appreciated this honest and direct approach, and explained that despite all the Daoist masters he had met with in the past, none had explained the entire path to him in clear and understandable terms. Meng Wubin was very grateful and asked if I would take him as a disciple and guide him along the path? I stated that I teach everyone without question, and that there was no reason for him to ask, as I already considered him part of the Qianfeng family. I said that I will teach him so that he could eventually teach others directly. What is difficult about this?
Meng Wubin was then initiated into the Qianfeng School through a simple process of ritually entering the gate by his elder Qianfeng Daoist brother ‘Divine-sky Ladder Disciple’ (天梯子 – Tian Ti Zi). I next granted Meng Wubin the Daoist name of ‘Divine-sky Fist Disciple’ (天拳子 – Tian Quan Zi). After he had shown the appropriate respect, he said that he understood that I had achieved all the objectives of the Daoist training and could therefore instruct him properly. I explained to him why some of his qi energy channels were not fully open and distributing qi energy around the body as efficiently as they could. I then showed him how to open the qi energy channels and unblock the psycho-physical obstructions contained therein. This included me pressing various pressure points around the body; eventually Meng Wubin’s qi energy channels were operating optimally and he began to sweat – which is normal in this situation. I then taught him how to practice internal external qigong exercises. He thanked me for conveying the true and authentic teachings to him, and said that his whole body felt free and unobstructed. He also reported that his feet became warm – which is to be expected. Having experienced first-hand the powerful method of Qianfeng Daoism, Meng Wubin promised to strive to be worthy of its teachings.
