My Qianfeng Training Experience (Disciple Tian Jie Zi)

I remember that when I first began my study of Daoist self-cultivation, my body was deficient in many ways. For instance, I suffered from shortness of breath, was continuously tired, and I lacked motivation throughout the day. However, due to the mercy and compassion of my master, I was granted access to the Qianfeng (external) self-cultivation methods. After more than two years of practice, I experienced a deep and profound transformation which I would like to share with you here. I am of the opinion that anyone who focuses their mind and disciplines their body can attain to the transcendent teachings associated with this school. I came to see the master because I felt weak (all over) and I asked if I could be trained so that I could live longer, and if this is possible, what I should do. He said that people who are materially successful become weakened because they have diminished their essential essence (jing) and depleted their vital force (qi) and do not know how to reverse this process and become strong.
This is how the master explained reality to me, and because of this, I had a complete confidence in his teaching. I then studied the six step exercises for two years and went to the master for further guidance. Using the vital force exploration method, Master Zhao saw that my inner qi energy circulation had not strengthened, but also saw that I had committed myself diligently to the external exercises he had given me. He then taught me ‘sweating ox self-cultivation’ (汗牛功 – Han Niu Gong) which I thought was a very unusual method, but which I strived to master with the utmost vigour. During this time I ’did not smile because it was not in accordance with the pursing of the Dao’, such was my commitment to training. After a short time of practice (less than a year) I began to feel much more energetic all day, and food appeared to have a special fragrance associated with it. After sexual intercourse I no longer felt exhausted or diminished. I am not shy to admit that before starting this training my sexual stamina was short, but after this training my stamina markedly increased and my erection was hard and firm, when before I suffered from erectile dysfunction from time to time.
My kind master said that those outside our lineage desperately try to cultivate their vital force (qi) with little success, but for us (within the Qianfeng tradition) such vital force (qi) cultivation is a fundamental practice and an important point of mastery, and he said that I had used my training time efficiently. This process was helped by having a wife and parents who understood that they cannot be selfish when I am training, and that they must do things for themselves until the training is over. When the training is over and the practitioner is fully revitalised, then their family and social duties can be fully re-engaged with a new strength and effectiveness. My understanding is that weakness in the body leads to the development of many different illnesses and ailments, but that training (even for a short time) has the potential to immediately restore health. This is achieved by increasing vital force (qi) flow to the five internal organs and six hollow organs, as well as through the bones to and from the limbs. This is in accordance with the Yellow Emperor’s classical teaching on training the externality of the body (黄帝外经– Hung Di Wai Jing):
‘Wu Xian (巫咸) asked: What is the purpose of opening the qi energy channel and its specific acupuncture points? Qi Bo replied: This refers to nourishing the kidneys with vital force (qi) so that energy flows up the back and down the front of the body without interruption, whilst opening various important acupuncture points (such as the Jade Pillow situated at the base of the back of the head) to ensure a continuous cycle of vital force. Wu Xian asked: Why is this important? Qi Bo replied: Without the qi energy channels properly opened and functioning properly, life is shortened and death is hastened. Wi Xian asked: What is the meaning of life and death? Qi Bo replied: The gateway to life is like water integrating with fire. This is the real method for accumulating prenatal vital force (qi). It is also how postnatal vital force (qi) is accumulated in the stomach and spleen. Prenatal vital force (qi) should not be confused with postnatal vital force (qi). Prenatal vital force (qi) does not last long (and is difficult to regain). If prenatal vital force (qi) is mistaken for postnatal vital force (qi) then the former cannot be correctly cultivated. This is because the two types of vital force (qi) are as different as night and day and should not be confused with one another. At birth prenatal vital force (qi) transforms into postnatal vital force (qi) and the state of purity is lost. The previously unified prenatal vital force (qi) disperses (and flows up and down) throughout the body and flows into the various organs becoming postnatal vital force (qi). Cultivating the qi energy flow is the correct Daoist method for regaining prenatal vital force (qi). If the vital force is developed (through self-cultivation) then qi energy becomes enriched with vitality and naturally rises throughout the body without hindrance or weakness in circulation. However, if vital force (qi) is not developed (by preventing its wastage) then disease and premature aging is the result. Wu Xian asked: How is good vital force (qi) prevented from being wasted? Qi Bo replied: Fire is beneficial to the kidney area if it integrates with water – this process benefits humanity. Wu Xian answered: Good answers.’
The Patriarch of Qianfeng Daoism – Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) – trained with over 36 different Daoist masters to secure this special Daoist knowledge. This knowledge is dependent upon cultivating virtue to attain robust health (and Immortality). In this way anyone who wants instruction can receive it (free of charge) but they must train with sincerity and diligence for its method to be successful. Qianfeng disciples should remember that they must cultivate virtue – never forget this important point. If you are not gracious and compliant in your learning, how can you progress? Make every effort you can in your Daoist self-cultivation because time is short.

恩师日:型大之人没精气易枉然,有精气者强.
得此真师之言,从此我信心倍增,后来练习外六步两年,翌年见师父,师父用探气真法探我,见我身体没有进 展,但看我有用心练习外功,就把汗牛功教我,此功形状诡异,融会贯通者犹如疯癫,真好个"不笑不为真道 者".又练了年许,当时的感觉就是整天都精力充沛,吃饭特香,性生活也后不再觉的疲劳了,我不害羞说,以 前我一次只有几分钟,现在时间长且不累,有时候很勤用工,一到晚上下面就涨的不行,特大特硬的.
恩师言:这是有点气通了,外人想气通都是梦寐难求的事,但对于我们来说,最起码的是要精通,你还不是时 候,不能拔苗助长,平日多用功以增补,妻儿父母都要尽其人事,不能自私.我的感受是此功对所有虚弱之病都有立竿见影的效果, 此功又是从五脏六腑到四肢百骸都顾及得到!与黄 帝外经所述一致.
巫咸问曰:人身三关在何经乎?岐伯曰:三关者,河车之关也。上玉枕,中肾脊、下尾间。巫咸曰:三关何故关人生死乎?岐伯曰:关人生死,故名曰关。巫咸曰:请问生死之义。岐伯曰:命门者,水中火也。水火之中实藏先天之气,脾胃之气后天之气也。先天之气不交于后天,则先天之气不长。后天之气不交于先天,则后天之气不化。二气必昼夜交,而后生生不息也。然而后天之气必得先天之气先交而后生。而先天之气必由下而上升降诸脾胃,以分散于各脏腑。三关者,先天之气所行之径道也。气旺则升降无碍,气衰则阻,阻则人病矣。巫咸曰:气衰安旺乎?岐伯曰;助命门之火,益肾阴之水,则气自旺矣。巫咸曰:善。
千峰老人说:得此功,余访明师三十六位之多,终得其口诀之法实属天赐之德,凡我之后人得其诀者都与我 道有缘.
所以说得之者真要倍感珍惜,不得者又怎么能不尽力争取学到呢?得之者绝不能忘师恩祖恩千峰之德,千峰 弟子谨记.
