Miraculous Daoist Self-Cultivation that Strengthens a Purified Mind and Body

(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
Within the school of philosophical Daoism, the ‘true’ teaching (in the past) was only transmitted from one generation to the next, by a fully qualified master to a very select and limited number of disciples. This was to keep the lineage ‘pure’ through the conveyance of secret formulas (and mantras) which guaranteed that only people with the right type of character were taught, and that the master did not waste his time instructing those with no real commitment or the ability to appropriately understand the teachings or the correct method. This process conformed strictly with early Confucian ideas of ‘respect’, and equated the ability to ‘obey’ with the possession of ‘transcendent intelligence’. Although respect is still a key aspect of Daoist teaching in today’s modern China, things have changed dramatically since the times of old feudal China.
A true Daoist dedicates their time to serious practice whether living as a priest in the hills, or an ordinary person within society. Sincerity and focus are crucial aspects of mind and body, if internal (energy centre) self-cultivation (内丹 – Nei Dan) is to be effective. A genuine lineage of Daoist self-cultivation teaches a method that cultivates the mind and body simultaneously, that strengthens the life essence and generates positive thoughts and actions. This process of constant refinement creates the conditions for robust good health, and longevity (性命双修 – Xing Ming Shuang Xu). A genuine Daoist lineage does not limit the practitioner to only minor attainments (which nevertheless must be fully mastered), but sets much higher goals from the very beginning. This requires the refinement of dragon and tiger qi energy, with the fundamental ability to correctly discern the difference between these two types of distinct energy flow. To achieve this attainment, a dedicated disciple of a legitimate lineage must receive correct instruction from a fully qualified master, or mistakes will occur and no progress will be made. Although Daoist instruction manuals can be useful at the beginning, and for the lower levels of attainment, they cannot replace the expert guidance required at the highest levels of Daoist self-cultivation.
This is the problem for Daoist practitioners today; the practice of Xing Ming Shuang Xu (性命双修) is a double-edged sword whereby an adherent can either advance to sublime levels of attainment, or damage themselves very badly by taking the wrong direction during self-cultivation. Genuine Daoist practice is a great (but ‘narrow’) gate that is very difficult to a) find, and b) enter. If this ‘great’ Daoist gate is not found, then there will be no positive progress. The yin empty spirit (shen) will be at risk if the wrong direction is taken. Over the years, many hundreds of disciples have travelled through the Qianfeng Hermitage in Beijing. The beginning of training is always the same, as qi energy must be ‘unblocked’ throughout all areas of the body, so that it ‘flows’ unhindered through every energy channel (经脉 – Jing Mai) without hindrance. This process strengthens essential nature (jing) and the qi energy, its flow and the channels through which it all flows. As this enhanced qi flows through the inner organs, the entire system is correctly strengthened and balanced – this is an excellent foundation to begin authentic Daoist self-cultivation, and all future attainments are premised upon its exact achievement. Since the 1980's, there has been a rapid increase in the practice of Daoist self-cultivation, and I have heard many stories about corrupt teachings that inflict severe injury. This is a path that must be avoided at all costs.
The Daoist method requires a strong mind and body foundation. If the correct Daoist method is used to generate this, then the health effects (and sense of well-being) will appear to be nothing short of miraculous, such is the positive effect experienced. The founder of the Qianfeng tradition – Zhao Bichen (赵避尘) – made extensive use of the big dipper (seven stars) acupuncture stick, that he took years to master, and which he used over many decades to unblock qi energy blockages in his disciples (and so aided their Daoist self-cultivation). Last year I assisted a great feng shui (风水) master by using the big dipper (seven stars) acupuncture stick on his governing vessel (督脉 – Du Mai) – which runs from the tip of the lower spine up the spinal column, over the top of the head, stopping in the bridge of the upper jaw. As he had poor qi energy flow for many years, his skin had black and purple bruising across the back. After I began treatment, this condition completely cleared-up and he felt much better. He thought this transformation was nothing less than miraculous. This treatment required the flushing of the inner system of all negative yin energy that had built-up over-time, and which was causing all kinds of illness and ailment. I was able to completely re-balance the yin and yang qi energy flow throughout his entire body in a relatively short-time. In modern China, what might well seem ‘miraculous’ is in fact the application of rational Daoist science, free of the taint of superstition and ignorance.
