Master Zhao Ming Wang Inherits the Qianfeng School - Neidan Practice and Realisation

(TRANSLATED BY ADRIAN CHAN-WYLES PHD)
From the age of seven-years-old, it was clear that ‘Yu Zi’ (余自) had a deep affinity with Daoist ‘Essential Life Mind-Body' (性命双修 - Xing Ming Shuang Xiu) self-cultivation. This is because the ‘Zhao’ (赵) family are predestined to be profoundly associated with practicing, preserving and passing-on the genuine and authentic Daoist teachings. Yu Tai Ye (余太爷) - ‘Yu Grand Lord’ (the Chinese term for ‘Great Grandfather’) - is my great grandfather ‘Zhao Bichen’ (赵避尘) - the Founding Patriarch (始祖 - Shi Zu) of the Qianfeng Xian Tian (千峰先天) or ‘Thousand Peaks Pre-Natal' School (派 - Pai). When I was young, I used to listen to stories told to me by my grandfather – Zhao Feng Xian (赵凤贤) - about the extraordinary deeds of his father, the now famous ‘Zhao Bichen’! My favourite stories were about his days as a professional bodyguard (where as well as being proficient in a number of ‘unarmed’ martial arts, Zhao Bichen was also an expert in the carrying and throwing of small, sharp and concealed metal darts secured to his wrist by a metal chain or strong cord used for immediate retraction and re-throwing). My grandfather was very compassionate and understood that I was born with certain deficiencies. He would always spend time teaching me with how to ‘regulate’ the bodily energy channels (经络 - Jing Luo) whilst encouraging me to choose and eat delicious food that boosted my inner energy strength and flow.
Thirty-years flew by (c. 1996), and suddenly my grandfather was at the end of his allotted life-span. I was called to his bedside and he told me: ‘It is the duty of the Zhao Family to preserve and pass-on the ‘Qianfeng Xiantian Pai’ and now I declare that you are the ‘new’ lineage inheritor of this tradition. I hope you will work hard to preserve, develop and pass it on!’ The problem was that deep down I did not particularly like the traditional Chinese longevity and martial arts, as I had suffered injury during that era. Not only this, but I felt that my work-life was slow, unproductive and going nowhere. As my life lacked inner focus and outer direction, I did not possess the strength of character to correctly practice ‘neidan’ (內丹). Instead, I thought the outer movements of Taiji (太极) were better than ‘Essential Life’ (性命 - Xing Ming) self-cultivation - as if the two were not connected – and I thought the ‘speed’ of external martial arts was ‘useful’ in life (as if ‘rushing’ was better than cultivating ‘stillness’).
From 1996 onwards for about nine-years, I organised mountain-climbing expeditions at weekends for members of my work-unit. I was always last to go up the mountain to make sure everyone was okay. Then one day (around 2005) as I tried to climb, my body felt ‘heavy’ and difficult to ‘co-ordinate’ as I struggled with every-step. Coming down the mountain was not much better despite the advantage of gravity being on my side! After being examined by a doctor, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high blood sugar (diabetes) and high blood fat (cholesterol) content! After hearing this, I thought life was terrible with no prospect of improvement! At this moment of my greatest despair, I suddenly remembered (with crystal clarity) what my grandfather had said when he handed on the Qianfeng lineage to me! As I was already ‘ill’, I used this as the motivation to settle down and dedicate my life to genuine ‘neidan’ self-cultivation. This is when I began to appreciate the inherent connection between ‘life’ and ‘nature’. Between the ‘essence of nature’ and the biological ‘function’ of life. Through focusing the mind and disciplining the body – I began to genuinely experience the profound ‘feeling’ of ‘self-repair’. After just one month of dedicated ‘neidan’ practice – when I returned to the doctor – all my three ailments had completely reduced and my blood had returned to normal! After this, I quit my regular job and returned to the family home to dedicate myself to in-depth practice. Yes – there were other problems, but nothing I could not ‘heal’ through ‘neidan’ practice!
I have persisted in this practice for over twenty-years now, and have made great in-roads into the genuine practice of authentic Daoism. The reality is that the ‘Essential Life Mind-Body' self-cultivation is truly profound, wondrous and mysterious! Traditional ‘neidan’ practice is not easy and the exact method must be received from an authentic teacher and put into practice by a dedicated disciple! This is not the same as the superficial understanding that abounds throughout society today. Superficial training will only produce superficial results. Life will not be extended and there will be no martial arts ability. The point is that profound inner change must also be reinforced with profound outer change in the conditions of everyday life. Without this transformation, nothing serious or long-lasting can be experienced! Superficial habit is not profound ‘law’. Years after taking the Qianfeng path seriously, I now know that the depth of the mystery is immeasurable and will never stop revealing new levels of attainment or layers of reality. Jing (精) is continuously circulated so that qi (氣) energy is transformed into ‘Vital Force’ (炁 - Qi) and an ‘expanded’ consciousness is developed (神 - Shen).
