On the 17th of February, 2013, Master Zhao Ming Wang met with Liu Jun of the Shenzhen ‘Strong Body’ martial arts club, at the Qianfeng Hermitage in Beijing to discuss social issues, and the general subject of health. Liu Jun mentioned that many young people today do not take adequate care of their physical health. This is caused in-part by too many people spending greater amounts of time working on the internet, and neglecting their physical and psychological health. When health is neglected, this leads to a detriment of moral integrity throughout society which is a world-wide issue of great concern that is not just limited to the boundaries of geographical China. We agree that wisdom and virtue should be introduced into primary schools so that young children learn early on that there is a direct link between physical and mental health with living a good and productive life.
Liu Jun is a tall and strong fellow from the northeast of China who has practiced martial arts mind and body training since an early age. He has developed virtue and wisdom through the sweat of his own continuous, diligent and very hard work. Through the development of virtue he has mastered the martial arts and become a gentleman and a scholar. He has dedicated his life to pursuing martial excellence through the Chinese systems of self-defence which he now teaches through his ‘Strong Body’ martial arts school in Shenzhen, which is a city that has developed tremendously over the last ten years, and which has massive potential for growth. This is demonstrated through the fact that his martial club attracts students not only from all over China, but also from the US, Hong Kong and many other countries. Liu Jun trains his students logically so that their minds and bodies are developed equally and their skill levels become very good. They take this development (and skill) back to their places of origination – thus spreading virtue and good health. Liu Jun explained that although he has achieved very good levels of physical (and psychological) fitness, he feels that there are higher levels that can still be reached through clearly applying the Daoist teachings of robust health building and longevity training, so that the ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ can be fully developed through martial training to the highest degree. This is why in recent years he has been gathering Daoist documents regarding ‘neidan’ (inner energy centre cultivation) and ‘gongfa’ (correct self-cultivation techniques) that are designed to develop the mind and body, build health and prolong life.
Whilst at the Qianfeng Hermitage in Beijing, Liu Jun diligently studied the correct Daoist mind and body techniques that build health and prolong life. I explained that Chinese Daoism developed over thousands of years and was created by the ancient masters who carefully guarded their knowledge and wisdom, but that in the modern times the Qianfeng School follows the policy of teaching any sincere student who requests instruction. I made the point that Qianfeng Daoism is now very important and influential not only in China, but also internationally, and that recently we had been visited by Professor Howard C. Nusbaum of the US – a specialist in the subject of psychology. He is the Director of the Social Cognitive Neuroscience Research Center of Chicago University and together with the strategic genius and expert in history Dr Zhang Qingsong, has acquired funding from the John Templeton Foundation to pursue research in wisdom studies. In fact Dr Zhang has set-up an International (Chinese) Wisdom Society, and the Zhao Bichen Life of Wisdom Research Project. This includes all aspects of life including martial arts, health and the optimum use of the mind for generating advanced and progressive thought. With careful planning and a definite direction, we intend to attract the attention of the broader community.
