Learning Directly from Zhao Bichen’s Manual

Daoist health building and life-extending exercises are called ‘power laws’ (功法 – Gong Fa) as they collectively contain the essence of all Daoist knowledge. This knowledge is a Daoist science that has been developed over thousands of years of experimentation and observation of the cycles of nature and the cycles of humanity. Gong Fa exercises are incredibly sophisticated, difficult to find, and hard to master without the accompanying wisdom of a master. Gong Fa exercises are the doorway from mortality to the attainment of Immortality.
Correct Gong Fa exercises definitely exist, but it is often not very easy to find an authentic lineage or a qualified teacher. Of course movements can be found in a book or on a video, or passed on by those who have picked them up from elsewhere, but this haphazard manner in acquiring true Daoist knowledge is disrespectful and lacks the appropriate ‘virtue’ that gives Gong Fa exercises their effective transformative power. This type of inadequate acquisition does not enter the true gate of Daoism, but has the potential to lead people astray and make their health worse. A true Gong Fa technique ‘stills’ the mind and regulates the body through a vegetarian diet. Purification of the mind processes (from deluded thoughts and passions) and purification of the body tissue from the negative effects of meat eating are essential practices. This state of purification begins simply by regulating the breath correctly. If the breath is not regulated correctly, qi energy flow is not developed freely in the body (and mind), and essential nature (jing) and spirit (shen) cannot be developed. If there is no correct Gong Fa practice, progress does not occur.
A good teacher who has realised the Dao teaches the student how to understand and harmonise yin and yang. Yin and Yang are two aspects of the qi energy flow that can manifest in different parts of the body (and mind) as excessive or deficient in heat or cold. Gong Fa practice eradicates any imbalances so that qi energy flows properly (in its yin or yang form) through the qi energy channels and effectively in and out of the five organs. Breath regulates qi, whilst qi builds essential nature (jing) and spirit (shen). This heating process (which is created by the proper focus of the mind during Gong Fa meditation practice) happens in the lower energy centre (dantian) which is two inches below the navel.
My great grandfather Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) compiled the manual entitled ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’. Knowing this to be true, and given that this book contains instruction from beginning to end of the Daoist path, where is the difficulty in practicing Gong Fa? Good instruction is the key and this is usually gained through association with a competent teacher, however, Zhao Bichen was an Immortal and his words carry a great weight of meaning throughout time. If his manual is read in the wrong manner its true content will not be perceived and Gong Fa practice will not be productive. A lack of knowledge manifests as a deficient practice and this is why I always recommend finding a good teacher who knows how to correctly guide a student. However, if the mind of the Gong Fa practitioner is already ‘correct’ when the manual is read, then (and only then) will the Gong Fa practice be productive. A properly receptive mind possesses the basis of virtue and knowledge acquisition and is in a position to positively benefit from Zhao Bichen’s manual. Obviously I do not often give this advice because it requires specific and difficult to acquire inner and outer psycho-physical conditions to learn from a manual as if it were a living teacher. This can be achieved but it is rare. I record this knowledge of Gong Fa practice here so that it is preserved for future generations. If you clear the mind of impurities, all things are possible.
