On November 12th, 2017, the venerable Daoist priests (resident at the Flourishing Source Temple [盛本圆 – Sheng Ben Yuan] situated on Zhongnan Mountain), reported that a gilded statue of Zhao Bichen (赵避尘) was enshrined within the temple grounds. Zhao Bichen – also known as ‘Yi Zi’ (一子) – is the Founding Patriarch of the Qianfeng Prenatal School (千峰先天派 – Qian Feng Xian Tian Pai), being the 11th Generation (outside the temple) inheritor of the Dragon Gate (龙门) lineage. The ceremony was a complete success, with the glowing golden statue of Zhao Bichen representing his profound ‘Dharma-Body’ (法身 – Fa Shen). From high upon Zhongnan Mountain, the (seated) golden body of Zhao Bichen exudes the highest Daoist meaning, which is typical of this special area. Indeed, the Daoist Authorities of this temple allowed their sacred training hall (道场 – Dao Chang) to be opened to the disciples of the Zhao Gate (赵门 – Zhao Men) System, who were in attendance.
Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) – the Founder of the Qianfeng School – ever since a young child, loved to practice martial arts and study traditional Chinese medicine and Daoist self-cultivation techniques. He specialised in ‘internal energy centre’ (内丹 – Nei Dan) self-cultivation, and the ‘essence of life mind-body’ (性命双修 – Xing Ming Shuang Xiu) Daoist method. To achieve this mastery, Zhao Bichen spent many years travelling all over China, eventually receiving instruction from 36 different masters. After this, he finally arrived at the Golden Mountain Temple (金山寺 – Jin Shan Si) situated in Zhenjiang, where he received instruction from Liao Ran (了然) and Liao Kong (了空). It was under these two masters that Zhao Bichen finally penetrated the true essence of nei dan practice and the authentic Daoist self-cultivation technique. After 20 years of practice, all the energy channels of the entire body were fully opened, integrated and co-ordinated, and enlightenment was realised. Only then did Liao Kong – the holder of the true lineage (祖师法驾 – Zu Shi Fa Jia) – travel to the Changping area of Beijing, with the intention of transmitting this teaching to Zhao Bichen through the conveyance of secret formulas, and sealing this divine transmission in the world (天命 – Tian Ming) with the handing over of a secret instruction manual.
During the 17th year of the Republican era (1928), on the 17th day of the 4th month, out of respect to Master Liao Kong, (and with his permission), Zhao Bichen founded the Qianfeng School. The traditional, genuine and authentic Daoist teachings were transmitted into modern times, with Zhao Bichen being advised to abandon the old method of one transmission per generation, and to throw open the doors of the Qianfeng School for the general public. This is how the ordinary people became part of the traditional Daoist transmission, which is designed to spread robust health and longevity throughout society. Anyone who requests teaching will be helped, and anyone who comes for help is not compelled to stay. It is a free interaction that preserves the best of the past with the most progressive aspects of life within modern China. The Daoist method of nei dan has been developed over thousands of years and is a medical science and a medicinal system passed on in the world. The idea of a Daoist transmission only reaching six ears and three mouths per each generation was useful in the past, but is now out of date.
During the Republican era, Zhao Bichen taught many notable people such as the founding father of the Xinhai Revolution Zhu Ziqiao (朱子桥), the greatly renowned martial artist Du Xin Wu (杜心五), the Warlords Li Yuanhong (黎元洪), Wu Peifu (吴佩孚), Zhang Zuolin (张作霖) and his son – Zhang Xueliang (张学良) – and many other celebrities. However, Zhao Bichen did not teach only the famous, but taught many ordinary people with the number of his disciples thought to number around two thousand. Through his efforts, the legitimate and effective methods of genuine Daoist practice were preserved and made relevant to an entirely new generation of practitioners. This has led to dedicated ordinary people achieving good health, enlightenment and immortality through the teaching of the Qianfeng School. Zhao Bichen’s popularity was such that one day, Wu Peifu and dozens of senior members of the Republican Government of China came to his house – the old home of the Qianfeng School (situated at Beijing, No: 88 Stone Prince Consort Main Street - 北京石驸马大街88号 – Bei Jing Shi Fu Ma Da Jie 88 Hao) – and respectfully requested Daoist instruction. Zhao Bichen agreed, and taught this group the ‘Scaly Dragon Plunges into the Sea’ (蛟龙入海 – Jiao Long Ru Hai) method, which they all found impressive. Since that day, the reputation of Zhao Bichen and the Qianfeng School grew from strength to strength.
As the Founding Patriarch of the Qianfeng Prenatal School, Zhao Bichen compiled a number of instruction manuals during his lifetime. Of particular note are his books entitled the ‘Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’ (性命法訣明旨 – Xing Ming Fa Jue Ming Zhi), the ‘Secret of Internal Self-Cultivation’ (内修密要 – Nei Xiu Mi Yao), and the ‘Clear Explanations of Hygiene and Physiology’ (衛生生理學明指 – Wei Sheng Sheng Li Xue Ming Zhi). Some of these books have been translated into English and French, and their content has spread throughout the Western world. The ‘Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’ has proven very popular in China, and is considered one of Zhao Bichen’s greatest masterpieces of Daoist teaching. This book has even proven popular in Taiwan, where it has been republished in its original format with no revision.
This has led to the interesting situation where today, thousands of people spread across the world read Zhao Bichen’s words, and although not formal disciples of the Qianfeng School, nevertheless devotedly follow this or that Qianfeng teaching that suits their personality and life circumstance. Although not training in the complete system, and lacking direct instruction, it is also true that this type of practice has had a beneficial effect within the world. Many decades ago, Zhao Bichen devised and taught the 18 dynamic methods of Daoist self-cultivation. He taught this to a small but dedicated number of disciples who have gone on to teach hundreds more people (from all walks of life) the true essential teachings of Daoist self-cultivation. However, today the complete teachings of the Qianfeng School has been inherited by Zhao Ming Wang – the great grandson of Zhao Bichen – who teaches in Beijing. Zhao Bichen taught that a balance must be struck between wanting to train and the charging of money – where sincerity and honesty must mean more than wealth (even if there are some charges from time to time). To this end, and in this spirit of virtuous activity, Zhao Ming Wang has shared the first 6 lessons (via video on the internet) free of charge, which can be added to the Daoist knowledge that Zhao Ming Wang has freely shared in his blog and through his other writings.
