Following the Dao Requires Virtue and a Good Heart!

(TRANSLATED BY ADRIAN CHAN-WYLES PHD)
It is a common trait amongst Qianfeng School disciples that they all exhibit profound levels of ‘virtue’ and ‘compassion’. They are trustworthy, self-disciplined, caring and able to be a pillar of their communities. Such people are inwardly and outwardly robust and can be relied upon to always do the right thing! One such person is - Ma Jintian (马锦田) - a well-known martial arts expert from Shandong province. Indeed, so impressed have I been at the reputation that Ma Jintian possesses that I have authorised his Discipleship of the ‘Zhao Gate’ (赵门 - Zhao Men) and have formally welcomed him into the Qianfeng School!
Ma Jintian has led a balanced life that is both ‘ordinary’ and ‘extraordinary’ in equal measure! I have independently been told that Ma Jintian’s uncle passed away on June 6th of this year – but that for a number of years prior to this event – Ma Jintian (his nephew) dedicated all his time to looking after his uncle’s psychological and physical welfare! Near the very end of his life, his uncle needed more care than a single person could give – and so Ma Jintian was relieved of his daily duties (which were taken over by a team of professionals). It was around this time that Ma Jintian took the decision to travel to Beijing to seek-out the Qianfeng School! As I research the history and characters of all the people who apply for Discipleship of the Qianfeng School – I have been shown numerous photographs of Ma Jintian caring for his uncle in a virtuous manner that exhibits the highest calibre of filial piety! Indeed, when I asked Ma Jintian about this, he answered that he knew from his youngest age that he was destined to look-after his uncle for as long as he was able! This duty consumed much of his life for many years and he fulfilled it with a sense of joy and compassion!
The reality of existence is this: the mind must be ‘stilled’ so that the profound and underlying emptiness can be realised. This profound emptiness underlies all ‘movement’ and ‘stillness’. This is why martial arts practice is very much an important aspect of Daoist self-cultivation. Furthermore, the cultivation of ‘virtue’ not only leads the practitioner to realising the Dao of Emptiness – but once realised – the power of virtuous thinking and action is magnified infinitely! Realising the empty mind ground leads to the mind being ‘calm’ and ‘caring’ when interacting with others. This is how the teachings of genuine Daoism assists the peaceful and positive functioning of society and lays the foundation for helping everyone living within it. In this regard, although the physical movements of martial arts can be used for self-defence purposes (and protecting the community) - it is also true that these physical techniques are an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine and are designed to relax and strengthen the outer body – whilst clearing and uniting all the internal energy channels! This is how important traditional Chinese martial arts are for the inner and outer health of the body and mind! The bones are toughened, the joints are strengthened and relaxed, and all the inner organs function perfectly and in accordance with one another. Without striving in life, that is without applying self-discipline to difficult or trying circumstances, the true Dao cannot be realised and no genuine progress can be made in self-cultivation! Please think clearly about this!
