Dragon Gate School, Long Life and Mind-Body Daoist Self-cultivation

What is the Dao, and how should it be cultivated? What is Daoist self-cultivation? It is a fact that Daoist self-cultivation has
not only spread over the entirety of geographical China, but has continuously
existed for thousands of years. It has
been well-known for many generations, that the methods of Daoist
self-cultivation have the power to ensure health and prolong life
expectancy. This is what the cultivation
of the Dao can do for you. This involves
the practice of virtuous behaviour in all aspects of life. Daoist virtue has the moral power to benefit
individuals and society in multitudinous ways too many to count. It achieves this through regulating the yin
and yang energy which is the essence of life.
Many people I know as friends, want to practice Daoist self-cultivation, but they also want immediate results (which they do not attain), and are not prepared to commit themselves to long term and diligent training. Is this a reasonable position to take? From the ancient times, it has also been that qualified masters taught suitable students, and that the training took time and was logically pursued with patience. It is also clear that those who attempted Daoist self-cultivation without expert guidance, made many mistakes, took wrongs paths, and embraced heretical teachings that damaged their health. In the end, all their efforts were futile and their health was not improved, or their life-span extended. This was because they did not have access to genuine Daoist knowledge. My great grandfather – Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) – was the 11th generation inheritor of the Dragon Gate (Longmen) Daoist School, and he had the idea of modernising Daoist teaching, and making it more accessible for the common people, so that everyone could learn. In this way, a greater respect for health and life was propagated amongst the common people. Toward this end, he wrote two manuals especially designed for public consumption, they are entitled ‘'The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’, and ‘Clear Explanations of Hygiene and Physiology’. The merit of these texts is obvious, as they explain a clear and obvious Daoist path to take.
What is the point of human existence? Surely it is to live a long, healthy and fulfilling life. This can only be achieved if the mind and body are developed so that they are healthy, strong, and full of vigour. These attributes are exactly what Daoist self-cultivation achieves, providing the right path (Dao) is followed with the correct diligence and guidance. This is important, because Daoist self-cultivation promotes health, and extends the life-span. Just as important is the development of the mind and spirituality.
