Daoist Mastery - the Taoyuan Temple - and Qianfeng Mountain!

Master Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) spent much of his life outdoors as part of his profession on the one-hand, and his mission of seeking-out genuine Daoist self-cultivation technique on the other! Despite being one of the world’s major cities – Beijing is surrounded by vast and impressive countryside landscapes! Dense forests and dramatic mountains intersect with wide grass-lands, interspersed with streams, rivers and lakes... On the canals of Beijing, Master Zhao Bichen moved in all directions – eventually encountering at least 36 different Daoist Masters – all possessing part of the truth surrounding Daoist self-cultivation! This is how my great grandfather built up a depository of Daoist knowledge – whilst also building a good reputation as a sincere student in the Dao! This is the background behind how he was eventually introduced to the Ch’an Buddhist Master - ‘Liao Kong’ (了空) - who was the tenth-generation inheritor of the Quanzhen, Longmen, Wu Liu School of Daoist self-cultivation. Zhao Bichen eventually became the eleventh-generation inheritor of the Quanzhen, Longmen, Wu Liu School of Daoist self-cultivation. Technically speaking, Zhao Bichen was a ‘Disciple Outside of the Longmen Temple’ - because he was a ‘layman’ - although he had maintained a life of celibacy as part of his Daoist training. Only later, would he marry and have his first child at aged sixty-one years old!
In order to better understand the Daoist method of ‘Essential Life Mind-Body' self-cultivation, he used vernacular language to systematically explain Daoist philosophy. He edited and published a number of books regarding Daoist Inner Transformation as well as Hygiene Science - and other related subjects. He also studied Western medicine and ‘integrated’ these terms into Chinese medical texts. This means that the holy texts relating to the Qianfeng School are unusually ‘modern’ and teaching ethnic Chinese people about science (and biology) in the Western tradition! Of course, with the Founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, this idea started by Zhao Bichen is now a national policy! In recognition of the progressive nature of Zhao Bichen’s reforms – the government of New China had the name and biography of ‘Zhao Bichen’ added to the ‘Encyclopaedia of the Hidden Secrets of Philosophical Daoism’. Within this book is recorded the following data: ‘Zhao Bichen did not formerly inherit the Namo Pai transmission from Liu Ming Rui, but he did him honour by naming his new style of Daoism after Liu’s temple, which was built on Qian Feng Mountain (千峰山 – Qian Feng Shan), which is situated in the Changping District of Beijing. Liu Ming Rui’s temple on Qian Feng Mountain was named Tao Yuan Guan (桃园观), or ‘Peach Garden Temple’, and this is where Zhao met Liu as a teenager. Zhao Bichen was taken with the remote beauty of this place and used its name to convey the essence of his Daoist teaching.’ The following photographs have been taken in the area of Qianfeng Mountain and feature the ‘Taoyuan Temple’!
