Correct Qianfeng History and Statement of Concern Regarding Fraudulent Teachers
Original Chinese Language Article By: Qianfeng Daoist Master Zhao Ming Wang (赵明旺)
(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
The Qianfeng Prenatal School was founded 82 years ago at the time of writing this article (dated 1.10.2010) – meaning it was formally established in 1928. In these 82 years the Qianfeng Prenatal School has spread throughout China and has become known all over the world and is recognised as a highly effective and authentic School of Daoist Self-cultivation. It is understood that as a descendent of the Dragon Gate School (Longmen Pai), it teaches effective self-cultivation (gong fa) techniques that are designed to refine qi energy flow as it passes through the lower qi energy centre, as part of the building health and life extension practice method.
The Qianfeng Prenatal School was founded by Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) – the 11th generation inheritor of the (external) temple Dragon Gate School lineage. Zhao Bichen lived through earth-shattering changes within Chinese history, and these changes served as the backdrop to the development of the self-cultivation methods that would eventually comprise the Daoist qi energy techniques of the Qianfeng School. A major difference between Qianfeng and other Daoist Schools is that in the former all the self-cultivation techniques are taught in the language that the ordinary people can understand, which means everyone can learn without distinction or exception. For thousands of years the transmission of Daoist teaching was reserved for a very few and carefully chosen individuals from one generation to the next. With Qianfeng, however, what was previously ‘secret’ Daoist knowledge has now been spread everywhere.
Zhao Bichen was the Founding Ancestor of the Qianfeng Prenatal School, but he was assisted in its development by his elder brother named Zhao Kuiyi (赵魁一), and is an integration of philosophical Daoism (from the root Quan Zhen [Complete Reality] School) with Confucian and Buddhist thought. Through these three paths the Qianfeng School developed effective self-cultivation (gong fa) exercises designed to build health and prolong life, which includes a meditative system that reveals the true reality. They also established from the start the virtuous principle that Qianfeng teaching would never be taught for money. In fact it is also true that both Zhao Bichen and Zhao Kuiyi can both be considered Patriarchs of an entirely ‘new’ and ‘modern’ approach to Daoism which is premised upon medical and spiritual knowledge from China’s ancient past. Now anyone can practice Daoist self-cultivation in any place and at any time, and some people even realise the rarefied state of the bright spirit (yang shen).
Today the Qianfeng School now has a great influence in China and abroad. Within the 82 years of its history, two books have been very important in the English and Chinese languages. The first is Zhao Bichen’s manual entitled ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’, and the second is Zhao Kuiyi’s manual entitled ‘The Three Character Law Method Classic.’ Of particular importance for the Qianfeng School in the West has been the 1970 English language translation of Zhao Bichen’s ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’ (by Charles Luk) which has been re-published many times (under the title of ‘Taoist Yoga’). This English version of Zhao Bichen’s manual has done so much to convey the authentic Daoist self-cultivation techniques to the West. This is why I wish to sincerely say ‘thank you’ for this very important (cross-cultural) development on behalf of the Zhao Family and the Zhao Family Ancestors.
Zhao Bichen was my great grandfather and I – Zhao Ming Wang – as the inheritor of the Zhao Family lineage of Qianfeng Prenatal School Daoism, pledge to continue this tradition to the best of my ability and ensure that the honour of this Daoist School shines brightly for all to see. As the great grandson of the Founding Ancestor I will strive to uphold the highest standards of teaching Daoist self-cultivation to the people of the world through the Beijing Qianfeng Zhao Bichen Cultural Arts and Exchange Centre. Over the years many domestic and foreign Daoist students have come to the Centre and received free and good quality Daoist instruction. Absolutely anyone can benefit from learning the health building and life extending techniques devised by the ancestors.
Despite the rules of the Qianfeng School being very clear, I must report today that the good reputation of my great grandfather’s name-banner is being sullied by those who hold Qianfeng Daoist classes without my required knowledge and permission, and in the name of Zhao Bichen, falsely charge money for lesson supposedly about ‘Daoist Self-cultivation’ (gong fa). I want to take this opportunity to strongly condemn this corrupt development, and categorically state that what these others are doing IS NOT authorised by myself and IS NOT a true representation of my great grandfather – Zhao Bichen’s – original and authentic Qianfeng Daoist self-cultivation techniques as passed-on to him by his teachers as part of an uninterrupted historical lineage. The people who are doing this do not possess real lineages, have not received the correct training, and do not possess the truth. Those who charge ‘fees’ for instructing others in the self-development techniques of the Qianfeng Prenatal School are not authorised by myself and have nothing to do with the genuine Zhao Family Daoist traditions. This is because those who have been instructed properly have necessarily cultivated a great virtuous character and understanding over-time, and it is through these cultivated attributes that they understand to pass on the true Qianfeng tradition. The proper tradition is that there must be respect for the teacher so that correct knowledge can flow unhindered. At no time can a Qianfeng teacher ever charge for his or her services – this is definitely NOT allowed. Those who truly inherit the correct tradition of health building and life extending exercises only ever maintain the highest standards of virtuous behaviour and always hold the tradition in the highest regard. They never make a living out of teaching and always ensure that there is purity and brightness in everything they do. In this way they practice and teach the correct Qianfeng tradition.
