Buddhist Practice of the Dao

During September (and the time of the golden autumn), a
Buddhist monk (and several of his disciples) came to the Qianfeng Hermitage in
pursuit of authentic Daoist self-cultivation techniques, and to become a
Qianfeng disciple. This was the
venerable Dharma Master Ming Xuan (明喧法师 – Ming Xuan
Fa Shi), and he had come from the Samadhi Country Ch’an Temple (定国禅寺 – Ding Guo Ch’an Si) situated in Henan province. I gave him the Daoist name of ‘Divine-sky
Righteousness Disciple’ (天义子 – Tian Yi
Zi), and I explained that just as authentic Buddhism follows strict rules of
purity and does not charge disciples to study and learn, the Qianfeng Daoist
School also has strict rules of purity and never charges its disciples. We became brothers in the Dao, and as the
venerable master was already upholding the strict Buddhist monastic disciple, I
started to teach him the correct self-cultivation techniques. None of this transmission is reliant upon
even a single penny of money.
It is a historical fact that in China Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism have developed a profound interconnection and functionality. The 9th generation descendent (of the Dragon Gate School) was Liu Huayang (柳华阳) – he was also one of the founders of the Wu Liu School which combines Daoist and Ch’an Buddhist teachings. The 10th generation descendents (of the Dragon Gate School) were the Ch’an Buddhist monks named Liao Ran (了然), and Liao Kong (了空), who diligently preserved and passed –on the Dragon Gate School teachings. They passed this authentic teaching to the 11th generation descendent – Zhao Bichen (the founder of the Qianfeng Prenatal School) – who was my great grandfather. He thoroughly learned all the Daoist teachings and after inheriting the system, he brought honour to the tradition as he set about teaching everyone without exception how to build health and prolong life.
Today, I teach to uphold the memory of my great grandfather and do not accept factionalism, elitism, or exclusion when teaching the Dao. The point is to help everyone get healthier and live longer, it is that simple. Nothing must get in the way of conveying authentic Daoist self-cultivation to everyone who enquires.
