It is a historical fact that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has developed over thousands of years in China, and represents a distinct healing science in the world. In fact, when looking through the Chinese history books, it is clear that TCM has had different and various names throughout its development. For example, there is ‘Qi Huang’ (岐黄), ‘Qing Neng’ (青囊), ‘Xing Lin’ (杏林), ‘Xuan Hu’ (悬壶), ‘Ju Jing’ (橘井), ‘Da Fu’ (大夫), and ‘Lang Zhong’ (郎中). Of course, in modern times, the world possesses two main medical traditions – the Western system and the Chinese system. For the Chinese people, it has undeniably been the methods of TCM that have had the greater effect historically, and which have relieved suffering and cured illnesses. In fact, even a cursory look at Chinese history demonstrates just how TCM has been a part of every Chinese person’s life in the past. This is why TCM has been such an important part of the development of Chinese culture in general, having far-reaching and profound effects. A brief list of great TCM masters would include such people as ‘Xing Lin’ (杏林), ‘Sun Si Miao’ (孙思邈), and ‘Li Shi Zhen’ (李时珍), etc.
Fortunately, we have recently come into contact with Mr Liu (刘) the attending Physician of the Neurological Department of the Deshengmen Hospital in Beijing. He understands fully the historical importance of TCM for the treatment of the Chinese people. In fact, when discussing Daoism and TCM, it was confirmed just how entwined and inseparable the two systems are. However, in the past, the TCM aspect was much more prevalent amongst the people because Chinese doctors deliberately engaged the general public to treat all kinds of ailments and illnesses, whereas the Daoist habit of transmission involved a master teaching only a small number of people – and thereby keeping the Daoists teachings ‘secret’.
Mr Liu explained that at the Deshengmen Hospital, 99% of patients suffering with facial paralysis attending the Neurological Department, respond favourably to TCM techniques, when various Western medical methods have been tried but have failed. I think this is because Western medicine is premised only upon the ‘physical’, and does not contain a ‘spiritual essence’, or ‘mysterious’ element – ‘神奇’ (Shen Qi). This suggests that TCM has a certain theoretical strength in-depth development, generated over thousands of years, that is not necessarily superstitious, but which allow for a non-material premise that operates in the material world. What concerns me, however, is how many people (even in China), think that Western medicine is superior to Chinese medicine. How can this be? Even if it were acknowledged that Western medicine can be very effective in certain circumstances, this does not logically mean that TCM is of no worth! My personal view is that prejudice is of use in this matter, as both medicinal systems are very effective in their own ways, but I would like to thank all those men and women who dedicate their lives to preserving and transmitting the body of historical knowledge that constitutes TCM.
