Becoming an Immortal Buddha at the Qianfeng Hermitage

The ‘Great Dao’ (大道) is a matter of practical activity, and not empty talk about a Daoist metaphysics that is not fully understood. If you practice Daoist self-cultivation properly and in the correct manner, then as you enter the truth of the matter, you will naturally generate a profound understanding of Daoist methodology. Structured ‘change’ is the key to this transformative experience, whereby a practitioner transitions his or her mind and body from a state of ill-health to that of robust health. Nowadays, all countries in the world possess various kinds of nutritious foods and medicines. When we take them, we feel that there are real changes. The users will feel healthy, the skin will be tight, and wrinkles will disappear. In fact, this is an illusion inherent in the modern drug industry. If you do not take these drugs for a week, you will notice your health will regress to a worse position then when you started, and you will appear much older.
The Daoist science of the balancing of yin and yang explains that after the age of 47, energy levels diminish, physical abilities decline and people feel tired after the working day, whilst women enter the menopause, etc. This demonstrates that the body transitions from a prime state into that of a deficient state. No one can escape this reality.
The cycles of nature unfold, and the human body conforms to these cycles. Ample energy and harmony naturally declines, and an imbalance and disharmony ensues. Daoist science recognises this fact and has devised a rejuvenating science that reverses these processes. This body of knowledge is referred to as ‘性命双修’ (Xing Ming Shuang Xiu), or ‘Essential Life Mind Body’ self-cultivation. The cycles of nature demand that the body suffers a diminishing of ability, whilst Daoist techniques possess the ability to ‘reverse’ this process. Is this not something to smile about? If the Daoist method is correctly followed, then eventually we will become an Immortal Buddha (仙佛 – Xian Fu). However, although I can explain this to you, this is only an explanation, or perhaps a type of rhetoric. In reality, Daoist science has been the product of thousands of years of investigation of the cycles of nature and the workings of the human mind and body. The human body is a remarkable device full of potential and unusual or surprising biological and psychological mechanisms. Daoist scientists have taken years investigating the full subject of existence, and a logical medical knowledge has been the result. This is preserved within the legitimate lineages of the Daoist Schools.
When practising ‘Essential Life Mind Body’ self-cultivation, as preserved and transmitted through the Philosophical School of Daoism, it is clear to see that practitioners start from a position of deficient health, and as they apply the mind-body techniques properly, and in a co-ordinated and timely manner, then their psychological and physical health gradually stabilises, harmonises and strengthens. Such adherents transition from a state of ill-health to that of robust health. This being the case, this cannot be said to be a superstitious or false teaching, as the material reality is clear for all to see. Therefore, authentic Daoist self-cultivation is worthy of contemporary scientific scrutiny, and cannot be ignored as an anachronism from the past. Observing practitioners as their health is transformed is a matter of objective reality. Of course, the changes vary in scope depending upon whether an adherent is middle-aged or old-aged, but the improvements are definitely present. The first example involves a middle-aged man in his fifties was driving from Hengshui (Hebei) to Beijing, and on this journey he had to rest twice, as he felt fatigued. After a year of training, this man was able to make this journey whilst full of energy and not requiring to take a single rest. Secondly, those with chronic diseases find that after a period of disciplined practice, they find that these diseases regress and often completely disappear. Thirdly, when women pass fifty years of life, all kinds of problems can develop in the uterus and the general area of gynaecology. Regular Daoist practice can reduce the risk of these many ailments, and build energy and strength. The body can even rejuvenate so that it looks young and beautiful. Fourthly, men can benefit from this Daoist practice as it builds vigour and enhances self-awareness, a self-awareness that expands to encompass all things. This is achieved through disciplined practice, which includes the strengthening and enhancing of the yin and yang energy flow throughout the energy channels of the body. Particularly effective is the practice of ‘Sweating Ox’ (汗牛 – Han Niu) self-cultivation. This type of Daoist ‘science’ is a product of thousands of years Chinese cultural development. It is premised upon building ‘essential nature’ (精 – Jing), strengthening ‘vital force’ (气 – Qi) and cultivating an empty and expansive consciousness (神 – Shen). From this perspective, Daoist self-cultivation is an advanced form of self-improvement and self-empowerment.
