April 6th, 2012, might well prove to be the most memorable day of my life, because on this day a man aged over one hundred years old came to visit me! His essential nature (jing), his vital force (qi) and his spirit (shen) were all in excellent condition. In fact so healthy was he that I could see light emanating from his eyes! I politely requested that this venerable old man to come into my home, and as he saw the Qianfeng Prenatal School shrine with its pictures of the Qianfeng ancestors, this old man lit incense and deeply bowed down out of respect. With tears in his eyes, this old man said that he had come to find the current lineage inheritor of the Qianfeng School, and after I enquired why this was so, he told me the full story. He said that this year (2012) was his 111th birthday and that he was born around 1901. In 1931 he was initiated into the Qianfeng Prenatal School by none other than Zhao Bichen himself. He added that Zhao Bichen had given him the Daoist name of Xuan Liang Zi (玄亮子). When I heard this I was astonished and dropped to my knees out of respect.
This old man told me many stories regarding Zhao Bichen – my great grandfather. Zhao Bichen had an indomitable strength of character and excelled in teaching Daoist self-cultivation. Although a remarkable healer and builder of health, he was also greatly respected for his martial arts ability and the power that he could produce. This kind of advanced martial and healing knowledge was not common even amongst the Daoists of Beijing. His virtue was so strong that he always prevailed without undue effort. He always emphasised that to achieve the Dao of Immortality, a superior inner strength is required and that this must be generated through an intense self-discipline that never falters or changes directions. The old man then said that he once witnessed Zhao Bichen practice seated meditation for 78 hours without a break, and that not only did he not move, but his breathing appeared to cease altogether. Zhao Bichen said that we must suffer if we wish to develop extraordinary powers of relaxation, concentration, and qi energy development, and that we must give-up all attachments to the world and wander across the hills and in the valleys. The old man said that he had come to see the lineal descendent of Zhao Bichen to tell me these stories and so assist the preservation of the Qianfeng School. He went on to explain that Zhao Bichen would only eat at noon and in the evening time, but even then he would only ingest steamed vegetables (without seasoning) and three small steamed buns.
I sat and spoke with this Grand Master for many hours, and he did not leave the Qianfeng Cottage until 5am the following morning.
