Wisdom Eradicates Misunderstanding within Daoist Self-Cultivation

Chinese Philosophical Daoism, Complete Reality, Dragon Gate, Thousand Peaks Prenatal School and a dialogue with the International Wisdom Society regarding the correct interpretation and practice of self-cultivation techniques that build health and prolong life. The authority for the Qianfeng School to comment on this subject arises from its authentic and traditional history which has been maintained within a modern context. Daoist traditions have been built-up over thousands of years and have diversified into many lineages. There is the faith-based religious Daoism (Daojiao) and there is the philosophical Daoism (Daojia) which is premised upon reason and logic. Out of the Daojia tradition emerged the Complete Reality (Quan Zhen) School, which eventually developed the Dragon Gate (Longmen) sub-school. The Qianfeng School evolved out of the Dragon Gate as its founder – Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) – trained within that lineage (mastering the health building and mind and body self-cultivation techniques) and inherited the teaching. His Daoist name was ‘Yi Zi’ (一子).
The purpose of this meeting was to explore the ancient scholarly literature that comprise the Daoist Canon, and investigate the relationship between this teaching and the human capacity to generate wisdom. This is because if people can use their minds in a better or more evolved manner, they can understand the Daoist teachings to their advantage, and by so doing put them into practice and improve their quality of life. On the other hand, if by sincerely practicing a Daoist method correctly, practitioners can use this method to strengthen their mental faculties and therefore develop wisdom in this manner. In this regard, I – Zhao Ming Wang – and Dr Zhang Qingsong (President of the International Wisdom Society) from the USA have agreed to a dialogue designed to recognise and define exactly what ‘wisdom’ is and how it functions though the Qianfeng Daoist tradition.
With regards to the hard work associated with Daoist self-cultivation, the Founder of the Qianfeng School – Zhao Bichen – states in his writings that when essential nature (jing) is developed and refined, it accumulates within the brain and triggers the development of intelligence and the function of progressive and clever thinking, as well as building a strong force (力 – Li) within the body, and improving the over-all quality of life for the practitioner. This creates the conditions required for the generation of wisdom. As part of systematic preparation for this dialogue, Dr Zhang Qingsong and I have had many previous discussions. This has included meetings with the eminent American academic Professor Howard Nusbaum (那西本 – Na Xi Ben) – an expert in psychology at the University of Chicago, and the equally eminent Dr Zhang Qinglin (张庆林) – the head of psychology (and postgraduate candidate teacher) at the Southwest University in China. However, as wisdom does not belong to a single social strata of society, we have also communicated with many people both Chinese and foreign, and from all kinds of backgrounds, to establish how people throughout society interpret and make use of the faculty of wisdom. We came to the conclusion that the development of wisdom in the future, will be essential for the development of health both in China and throughout the world.
We wish to draw attention to the innate wisdom that runs through the centre of traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, and Daoist self-cultivation. Having established this fact those accessing wisdom-led traditions should first develop their capacity of wisdom so that they make the maximum use of the developmental techniques that are being engaged. This is because the techniques themselves are advanced and progressive in nature and require the practitioner to become attuned to this fact to prevent errors in interpretation. The aim to create a coordinated approach to public health through the development of the faculty of wisdom and to spread the use of wisdom throughout the entirety of society, so that all aspects of modern life can be optimised including all types of thinking and ideology. This a non-profit initiative intended to include all the ordinary people of the world, and to spread throughout all facets of society at both home and abroad. With this interaction it is hoped that the effectiveness of Daoist self-cultivation will also become well-known throughout the world, and that people will be inspired to carry-out their own research and investigations into its efficacy for the benefit of Daoist health building and preservation. If general knowledge of Daoist self-cultivation becomes widespread, then everyone will benefit as a result and misunderstanding will be eradicated. As this is a movement amongst the masses, everyone is encouraged to get involved. No one is excluded. At this present time, the International Wisdom Society and Zhao Bichen’s Qianfeng Daoism School are working together to further these aims and explain how wisdom has influenced the development of health and martial exercises. Although wisdom has no limits to its applicability, we intend to encourage discussion about its use within Daoism as our contribution to the world wisdom project.
Within China the socio-economic conditions are very well developed. This means that many people now have leisure time to enjoy hobbies and pastimes, etc. This has led to the development of first class gyms, leisure centres, and fitness studios. These establishments ‘sell’ lessons in martial arts, keep-fit and various Daoist exercises. Although there is much entertainment to be had, the understanding associated with these lessons is very superficial and lacking in wisdom. Correct Daoist self-cultivation focuses upon the generation of robust health and a prolonged life. Within the leisure industry training becomes merely a matter of recuperation – where people go to recover from one ailment or another – but which never teach the true purpose of Daoist self-cultivation. Correct Daoism which is premised upon wisdom, purposely develops essential nature (jing), qi energy and spirit (shen). This harmonises the yin and yang energy and builds a strong body (and clear mind). I think it is obvious which Path of Daoism is most advantageous for human beings. Affluence is not always good for our health and we know from studying the historically feudal China that even members of the nobility (who lived in opulent circumstances) often suffered ill health. What is the point of such an existence when it does not guarantee a long and healthy life? Modern China has been led by its government to a far better socio-economic condition which has seen life and diet increase dramatically in quality. This being the case, why has many people’s health started to fail? Why has there been an increase in heart and brain disease? This is because people lack wisdom and do not understand what true health is and how it should be gained, maintained and preserved.
Wise experience tells us that true health is not just about the superficial healing of the exterior body, but involves the purposeful development and transformation of the essential nature (jing), the vital force (qi) and the spirit (shen). Through correct effort the Daoist exercises strengthen the five internal organs through the harmonisation of the yin and yang qi energy flow throughout the inner body. The dialogue between myself and Dr Zhang clarified that wisdom is the basis of all knowledge and that it must be cultivated and present if good health is to be ensured throughout the world, and misunderstandings that mislead and prevent good health are to be eradicated. Wisdom in its most developed form resides in the mind, body and environment, and should not be prevented from expanding by human ignorance.
