The Transformative Concept of Dao

The term ‘Dao’ in China is known throughout the land in every household, and all recognise that it is the philosophical path that reconciles duality with oneness, and the Great Master Laozi (老子) is considered the ancient Founder of Philosophical Daoism. Philosophical Daoism is a path of practice that builds health and prolongs life. Although the ancient masters provided the correct foundational theory and practice, Daoist self-cultivation is a science that has continued to grow and evolve over thousands of years of observation, practice and experience. It is a precious and effective teaching that has taken a long time to gather and which has specialised in ‘repairing the mind and body and elongating the life span’. This is important to understand as this Daoist path is premised upon clear thinking and an exact body of techniques which must be practiced in the right order and in the correct manner. To follow the Dao is not a haphazard affair as it is not a path built upon irrationality and superstition which gets the practitioner nowhere. All human beings without exception would like to possess good health and live a long life.
The study of the Dao through philosophy is the tradition that works on establishing facts about nature together with how the human mind and body works. Such a body of knowledge also collects data about how nature changes, and how the human mind and body can suffer dysfunctionality, illnesses, diseases, and injuries, etc. The point of this data is to create a schematic whereby dysfunctionality and illness is reduced or eradicated, and maximum psychological and physical health is enhanced. As most people are not born naturally enlightened and independently healthy, the path of philosophical Daoism is pursued so that a poor constitution is transformed into one of radiance. The Qianfeng Prenatal School is a modern (and highly scientific) example of the philosophical Daoist tradition. Modern China has experienced a dramatic improvement in its material wealth over the last 30 years or more. This has been the result of the nation working hard to effect socio-economic change. For many, they have worked so hard that they have neglected their health. Why shouldn’t the teachings of philosophical Daoism be used to help people living in advanced modern societies? People who live in modern cities and work all the time experience undue psychological and physical stress which is detrimental to good health and reducing the life-span. Many resort to taking medicines as and when they notice this or that negative symptom, whilst riding exercise bikes – but how can these superficial responses put right the inner weaknesses of qi energy, essential nature (jing), and spirit (shen)? The body is a precious vehicle that we currently occupy, if we do not look after it through good diet and moderate exercise, then it will age before its time, and development endless diseases.
China has an ancient Daoist tradition of healing going back to at least the Yellow Emperor and his ‘Internal Medicine Classic’. Philosophical Daoism is both dynamic and practical. Its techniques transcend poor qi energy flow, insufficient essential nature (jing) and obscured spirit (shen). Daoist methods transcend psychological and physical poor health, and permanently changes the conditions that shorten life-spans. It achieves all these goals through clear thinking and the logical application of psycho-physical techniques. Philosophical Daoism is a science and is not a religion or a myth. If the qi energy is correctly cultivated then essential nature (jing) becomes strengthened and all beneficial things stem from this. A good teacher has the knowledge to help a sincere student enter the correct path of authentic Daoist self-cultivation. When the qi energy is flowing freely and strongly, it automatically nourishes the five internal organs. This transforms the inner health of the body so that the outer health of the body correspondingly improves. What links the inner and outer health of the body is the harmonising of the yin and yang expression of the qi energy flow. If yin and yang is imbalanced, then the qi energy flow around the body will be impeded, inadequate, and insufficient to maintain the biological processes and functions of the mind and body. The teachings and techniques of philosophical Daoism can rectify all these problems and create the conditions for good health and long life. Practicing Daoism should not be a descent into chaos, but rather an ascent into clarity and light.
