The Peaks are Not High – the Waters are Not Deep

Chan-Wyles PhD)
To the northwest of Beijing lies the Yan Shan mountain range,
which is also known as Qianfeng Shan, or ‘Thousand Peak Mountain’. At this place it is said that the peaks are
not high, and the waters are not deep. There
is probably over 10 Km’s of mountain peaks, and around 30 temples spread
throughout the area. Beijing is famous
for its beautiful Huiyuan Ecological Gardens, and to the northwest there is
also my hometown of Yang Feng Town. This
is the place where the ‘Stone Eagle Head’ structure (i.e. a pile of stones that
resemble an eagle’s head) can be found, which is situated on Shi Ying Shan (or ‘Stone
Eagle Mountain’). At this place there is
a pagoda, and at sunset, the spirit-like tower appears to emit light from the
west. This gives the impression of the
tower hanging (independently) in the air - like a spirit-mirror that reflects
all things.
Yang Feng Town is where a famous old Daoist practitioner and master was born. This respected person was Zhao Bichen (1860-1942), who eventually founded the Qianfeng School. Zhao Bichen was the 11th generation descendent of the Longmen (Dragon Gate) School of Daoism, and spent his entire life preserving and transmitting genuine Daoist culture. Whilst performing this task, he wrote a number of books such as the 'The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’, and the ‘Clear Explanations of Hygiene and Physiology’, as well as ‘Secret and Vital Inner Self-Cultivation’. He also wrote a commentary for his brother’s book entitled ‘Three Character Law Summary Classic’.
Zhao Bichen is recognised as a great master who spent his life cultivating physical and psychological health and longevity. To do this he trained with at least 36 different teachers, and suffered untold hardships travelling from place to place seeking genuine Daoist knowledge. He studied widely the profound methods of Daoism, and passed on his understanding of health and longevity to his brother – Zhao Kui Yi (see above picture) – who became an expert in the Daoist teachings in his own right. In fact these two brothers are considered to be great masters and contributors to the preservation and passing on of true and authentic Daoism in the modern age. In fact it is through Zhao Bichen’s 'The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’, and Zhao Kui Yi’s ‘Three Character Law Summary Classic’, that Daoist knowledge has spread so far. This is why the School of Qianfeng Daoism is now considered an important part of the numerous traditions that represent Chinese self-cultivation techniques.
The old master Zhao Bichen created the Qianfeng Prenatal School after he inherited the Longmen (Dragon Gate) teachings. This is how he received the legitimate teachings of ensuring both health and longevity during spiritual self-cultivation, and ably passed on the four great open-hand self-cultivation practices to future generations. These are 1) Beginning Hand, 2) Switching Hand, 3) Comprehending Hand, and 4) Letting-go Hand – altogether this represents a 16-step martial art practice. He was able to learn all the complex Daoist teachings from the old days, but explain them with such clarity that modern scholars could easily understand what they meant. He was a guiding light for contemporary China, as he had the ability to translate obscure traditional terms in common, or everyday language. He removed unnecessary mystery and contradiction by clearly stating that the mastery of true Daoist self-cultivation involves the refinement (and purification) of essence (jing), vital force (qi) and spirit (shen). This is an effective and proven body of knowledge that possesses the ability to heal chronic health problems and prolong life, which is particularly important for people who have reached middle-age. Heart disease is a major issue that can be elevated, whilst kidney disease is another, whilst the health and functionality of all the 5 internal organs is enhanced. Often the most unexpected but positive results are attained through diligent practice.
My name is Zhao Ming Wang and I am the great grandson of Zhao Bichen. To assist society, I have established the ‘Beijing Qianfeng Zhao Bichen Cultural Arts and Exchange Centre’, and I personally encourage everyone to make contact with me. In this way we can help the health of the people develop, and lengthen the life-span.
