The Correct Daoist Path Reveals Reality

Daoist Truth by Zhong Deshan (重德善)
Laozi said that it is good to be like water, because this is the best way to be virtuous. Military activity is destructive to life and environment, and its use and perpetuation is not good for the well-being of humanity. Warfare is not good for humanity, but even water, when it is in an excited state can cause disasters. Since the ancient times the Dao has always been pursued through the practice of benevolence and humanitarianism, and this is how the practice of the Dao is perpetually renewed. This requirement for continuously producing virtue and considering the welfare of others sets a very high moral standard for Daoists to follow. Virtuous and non-virtuous beings all possess yin and yang qi energy, but the difference lies in the fact that good people have used Daoist training to balance and strengthen their inner energy, whilst bad people have not.
What is the reality that underlies the Daoist techniques for building health and prolonging life? These techniques are based upon excellent knowledge built-up and developed over thousands of years of experimentation and observation throughout Chinese history. The techniques work because they are proven to be correct. If followed correctly, health becomes robust, and the life span is prolonged. This is achieved through ‘stilling’ and ‘calming’ the mind which leads to an enlightened state of expanded awareness. The reality of the Daoist techniques lead the practitioner to realise the true consciousness of the universe. It is said that only the virtuous teachings are successfully passed on from one generation to the next, and that those that possess no virtue are not passed on. Some have asked whether teachers should or should not accept money for teaching the Dao? I know that some people do teach for money, and I also know that others teach authentic Daoist knowledge to good students and do not charge any money. In the case of the latter, it is interesting to note that when virtue and sincerity are present between master and student, money is not required as an intermediary, doesn’t this make sense? My view is that sometimes fees can be accepted from new students studying Daoist self-cultivation as a means to test their sincerity and commitment, but on the other hand, if I find a good and talented student, I prefer not to include money in our Daoist self-cultivation practice. Besides, not everyone who is sincere has the money to ‘pay’ for authentic Daoist teachings, and I would rather not lose a good student just for a small amount of money. On the other hand, I do not want to be financially obligated to a student who lacks virtue and morality, but who possesses wealth, as such a worthless person is ‘buying’ my company. Of course there is also the situation where I take a small fee from humble students as a means to give them ‘face’ and not to cause them offense.
I have attended many National Congresses regarding good health, where I always put forward the Daoist Self-cultivation teachings that refine qi energy and prolongs life. I am continuously asked whether my lineage is authentic, and whether what I pass on is from a legitimate Daoist school. They ask about the Daoist path in practical terms, but also about what is the ultimate wisdom – or ‘reality’ – that Daoist self-cultivation achieves? Most people only possess a superficial knowledge about these things, or know just one or two basic facts about Daoism. I always answer by stating that true Daoist self-cultivation is not easy to practice, and that reality is difficult to achieve. Practices such as ‘Shutting-off Qi Energy at Death Law’ (闭气死法 – Bi Qi Si Fa), ‘Sealing Essential Nature Law’ (闭精法 – Bi Jing Fa), ‘Passing through the Mountain Pass Law’ (Guo Guan Fa), and ‘Exploring Qi Energy Law’ (探气法 – Tan Qi Fa), etc. If these intricate, subtle and complex teachings are to be understood, then the Daoist masters of the past must be remembered and respected for the knowledge and wisdom they possessed, and which they have passed on – such as the lineage I represent. This is how reality is both propagated by, and realised through Daoist self-cultivation techniques. The Dao of Immortality is built-up in practice through small logical steps of training that form a solid foundation to practice. Nothing can be rushed, and there are no short-cuts. The real Daoist lineages teach both internal and external training. Outer exercises strengthen the muscles and bones, whilst the inner techniques build and strengthen the qi energy flow, develop the essential nature (jing), and cultivates spirit (shen). When the inner and outer are perfectly developed and harmonised, the reality of Immortality is achieved. Since I placed a video online regarding external development, a student asked me if I was concerned about the wrong type of people learning the technique. I answered by pointing-out that the video only really benefits students who receive direct instruction from me, as only those students will possess the transmitted knowledge to comprehend the correct meaning. Those without correct Daoist instruction will not make any progress, particularly if their character is non-virtuous. It is a mysterious fact that Daoist students can only progress in their studies if they learn from a direct Daoist lineage inheritor. This is because a Daoist master has already realised Immortality and understands every facet of the Daoist self-cultivation techniques. This is truly amazing!
