The Charm of Yang Fang
Original Chinese Language Article By: Qianfeng Daoist Master Zhao Ming Wang (赵明旺)
(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
The town of Yang Fang lies on the border of the Changping and Haidian Districts of Beijing, but administratively falls within the boundaries of Changping. Although the town is small, it is a place rich in both culture and history. In ancient times it was associated with such important people as Jin Zhangzong (金章宗), Ming Wuzong (明武宗), Qing Shengzu (清圣祖), Qing Dezong (清德宗), the Empress Dowager Cixi (慈禧太后 – Ci Xi Tai Hou), and has been a place of importance associated with the princes and emperors of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). With the establishment of New China, it has been a place of political importance, associated with many State Leaders such as Mao Zedong (毛泽东), Deng Xiaoping (邓小平), Jiang Zemin (江泽民), Hu Jintao (胡锦涛) and so on, who have all set-foot here.
Today, after decades of successful Party leadership combined with the efforts of the Yang Fang populace and local leaders, the area has experienced a boom in its culture, economy, tourism, science and technology, and has become renowned as a successful modern town premised upon the cultural use of advanced knowledge and wisdom. This reality is expressed through a regular magazine entitled the ‘Surrounding Gardens of Beijing’ (北京后花园 – Bei Jing Hou Hua Yuan), which presents Yang Fang Town in a very positive and attractive light. This magazine has also covered the history of my great grandfather – Zhao Bichen (赵避尘) – who lived during the Late Qing and Republican Era. He is the Founder of the Qianfeng (千峰) School of Daoist self-cultivation.
Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) dedicated his life to learning authentic (and ancient) Daoist knowledge designed to build health and prolong life. As there was much confusion, misunderstanding, and misdirection at the time, Zhao Bichen made a very important contribution to the subject of traditional philosophical Daoism by clarifying what was correct and what was incorrect with regard to training the mind and body. After collecting together all this knowledge, and after his own attainment of Immortality, Zhao Bichen wrote-down all his knowledge and wisdom in a manual entitled ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’ (性命法訣明旨 – Xing Ming Fa Jue Ming Zhi) so that future generations could benefit from his extensive experiences. He also instigated the sharing of previously ‘secret’ Daoist knowledge with everyone, rather than the chosen few. This book has been translated into many Western languages, and is known in the West as ‘Chinese Yoga Health-building’ (中国的瑜伽养生 – Zhong Guo De Yu Jia Yang Sheng). I – Zhao Ming Wang – have inherited Zhao Bichen’s Family Lineage of Qianfeng Prenatal Daoism, and I emphasise that a hundred years of life can be achieved through a hundred years of effective Daoist practice. I have published a number of articles about Yang Fang Daoist culture in the above magazine on the subject of good health and longevity, as well as other Chinese publications covering how the modern use of Daoist self-developmental technique is both logical and reasonable, and fully in accordance with contemporary scientific and medical knowledge. My ideas have also become known in the West, through articles written by Westerners who have made contact with me, and discussed Qianfeng Daoism.
The ‘Surrounding Gardens of Beijing’ magazine also covered a three-day training school I held on May 1st, 2013, at the ‘Two Path River’ (二道河 – Er Dao He) scenic spot not far from Yang Fang Town. Dozens of people attended from across China, including Macao, as did a number of Westerners. I taught Daoist self-cultivation to build-health and prolong life, but I also taught the historical significance of Yang Fang Town. Daoism did not develop in a vacuum, or suddenly appear as if out of nowhere. Daoism is a product of Chinese culture in general, and its different schools have developed out of the specific traditions and cultures of local areas. Just as Daoism cannot be understood without first appreciating Chinese culture, Qianfeng Daoism cannot be fully understood if the geo-cultural area that gave rise to it – namely Yang Fang Town – is not taken into account during training in its techniques. Zhao Bichen was from Yang Fang Town and this area of physical and cultural beauty obviously influenced his approach to life, and attitudes toward Daoist practice.
