Revealing the True Nei Dan Teachings within Philosophical Daoism
Original Chinese Language Article By: Qianfeng Daoist Master Zhao Ming Wang (赵明旺)
(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
Although the Daoist teaching of ‘nei dan’ (内丹) has been passed down for thousands of years within Chinese history, only one or two disciples per generation were trained in its methods. Nei dan can be translated as ‘internal energy centre self-cultivation’, but despite this ancient Chinese science being very well researched and established (even in ancient times), it is also true that many did not fully understand the ‘way of energy centre self-cultivation’ (丹道 – Dan Dao). This fact explains why within modern China many people have no idea about the true essence of inner training, or the correct techniques used to acquire robust health and a long life.
In recent decades the health-boom has emerged not only within China but also overseas. It started on a small scale but soon spread everywhere. This opened the door for ‘fake’ masters to suddenly spring-up everywhere and mislead the people in their health practices. This is why I wrote a critical article a few years ago entitled the ‘Way of Energy Centre Self-cultivation and the (False) ‘Great Masters’ that Fly All-over the sky’ (丹道大师满天飞 – Dan Dao Da Shi Man Tian Fei). Today, there are a dazzling number of healthcare systems all claiming to be ‘authentic’ and vying with one another to attract money and prestige. The problem is that they cannot all be correct, but they could all be wrong. How is the general-public expected to distinguish the genuine from the false when authentic knowledge of correct nei dan practice is lacking?
The purpose of this article is give a reliable and sound basic explanation of nei dan for the use of the people. Within philosophical Daoism, nei dan practice is the central element of the comprehensive self-cultivation technique known as ‘Essence of Life Mind-Body Self-cultivation’ (性命双修 – Xing Ming Shuang Xiu). This is a classical health practice passed down for thousands within China which builds and strengthens ‘essential nature’ (精 – Jing) and ‘vital force’ (气 – Qi), delays ageing, strengthens the inner and outer body, and with pure living can even change your destiny in life. These changes can only happen if a practitioner follows the correct Daoist path in its entirety and receives timely instruction from a qualified master. This has the accumulative effect of bringing the mind and body into line with the highest attributes within human nature and within the physical and ethereal universe (天 – Tian), so that the psychological and physical ‘cause and effect’ which dictates our course through life (命 – Ming) is refined and improved to rarefied levels of conscious existence. Selfishness and petty mindedness means that we act as isolated individuals cut-off from one another and the natural forces of the greater universe. As we are responsible for our actions, we can choose to allow selflessness and altruism to become a part of our character, and in so doing allow for a broader (conscious) view of reality. This is what can be achieved if correct Daoist training is practised and realised.
Here is the problem; although authentic Daoist technique is still not very well-known today in China, how can it be that there are thousands of nei dan masters, and those who have developed their ‘yang’ (阳) energy and expanded their conscious awareness through cultivating ‘shen’ (神) – thus escaping the mundanity of life? Surely, in reality this cannot be the case. How can a lack of knowledge lead to a proliferation of advanced Daoist masters? For decades I have travelled through China (incognito) to investigate claims of unusual attainments or special abilities and have been very disappointed with what I have personally experienced. There is a saying in Beijing which sums-up this experience, namely ‘Reaching for (non-existent) Bridges in the Sky’ (天桥的把式 – Tian Qiao De Ba Shi). I would say that throughout the entirety of China there are only about ten people who are qualified Daoist practitioners who have attained robust health, longevity and unusual powers. As these people have acquired the ‘spirit of the dragon’ (神龙 – Shen Long), they are semi-ethereal in appearance and difficult to find and perceive. The frequency of their energy manifestation has completely transformed how each body cell operates and relates to other body cells. As the mind is fully expansive, conscious awareness has become infinite and contains the entirety of the material universe (whilst remaining essentially ‘empty’). It is very difficult for ordinary people to perceive these beings, but it is certainly the case that they do not run businesses or ask you for money. As they are disinterested in the world, they have no wish to interact or conflict.
Despite these difficulties, it is possible to ascertain a true nei dan practitioner from a false practitioner. Within the Qianfeng School there is a technique known as the ‘Immersing the Jade Flower in the Purity Bowl of the Southern Sea’ (玉花清盆南海中 – Yu Hua Qing Pen Nan Hai Zhong). This is how we distinguish fraudsters and liars from genuine Daoist practitioners within the Qianfeng School. Although this sounds very picturesque, the technique consists of a nei dan practitioner agreeing to have a plastic bag (such as found in a shop) secured over the head and seal around the neck. Can the practitioner continue to sit quietly with no further access to oxygen? A genuine nei dan practitioner of advanced accomplishment can sit for hours without moving, continuing to live on the meagre air trapped in the bag, as the breathing process has become so rarefied as to be seen to have ‘stopped’. Obviously, those without any advanced nei dan skill soon give-up and reveal their lack of ability. Either way the truth is established beyond a doubt.
The traditional basis of the nei dan practice as found within the Qianfeng School has been inherited from Daoist temples all over China. The great achievements of antiquity are contained therein. This is why the Qianfeng School has an unbroken lineage deep into the past, and has received the full and complete training associated with nei dan practice. This is a faultless transmission from one generation to the next. In the old days this was achieved through word of mouth instruction between a qualified master and a dedicated disciple. Zhao Bichen (趙避塵) [1860-1942] was the founder of the Qianfeng School. Today, I (Zhao Ming Wang - 赵明旺) continue the lineage of my great grandfather at the Qianfeng Hermitage (Zhao Bichen’s former home). I am dedicated to helping everyone without hindrance or boundary. Come to my home and I will teach you. Part of this mission has seen the Qianfeng School travelling all over China and teaching the ordinary people the ‘Essence of Life Mind-Body Self-cultivation’ (free of charge) as a matter of public welfare. People have praised our methods wherever we have visited. This is why I have started a special five-day training session starting on the 9th day of each month which is limited to three people, and which takes place at the Qianfeng Hermitage in Beijing. Anyone can attend regardless of background, ethnicity, religious view (or none), including loving couples, and I will adjust your qi-flow through opening the energy channels and teach you external (外 – Wai) and internal (内) qigong exercises.
