On Why Anyone Can Train in the Qianfeng School

The sages of ancient China developed Daoism as a distinct path of self-cultivation. They did this by observing the divine sky above, and the broad earth below, and developing an understanding of how the human mind and body is inherently linked to the cycles of the seasons, and the natural world. This body of knowledge and wisdom was formulated into a lineage that was passed-on down through the generations. This has been the case for thousands of years, and in that time, Daoist understanding has not been stagnant, or stood still, like any scientific understanding, Daoist methodology has developed over-time, and seen tremendous changes. The original understanding was referred to as ‘External Self-cultivation’ (外丹 – Wai Dan), which then developed into ‘Internal Self-Cultivation’ (内丹 – Nei Dan), which focused upon building the inner essence, or life-force. This evolved the system of cultivating ‘essential nature’ (精 – Jing), ‘vital force’ (气 – Qi), and ‘empty spirit’ (神 - Shen) as the main practice. The historical point of this ‘inner’ self-cultivation (内丹 – Nei Dan), has been to focus the mind and discipline the body simultaneously, so that both entities are understood to be an integrated ‘field’ of profound endeavour, whereby all psychological and physical attributes are purified and strengthened through the correct application of Daoist techniques. A process which results in the building of a robust health, and a prolonged life-span. This is the highest form of Daoist self-cultivation, which sees the cultivating ‘essential nature’ (精 – Jing), and ‘vital force’ (气 – Qi), with a profound realisation of an empty and all-embracing mind-set (i.e. ‘empty spirit’ (神 - Shen). Those who commit themselves to this path of disciplined study experience a profound transformational experience. This is the realisation of spiritual and physical reality without any hindrance. The mind becomes sharp and bright, whilst the body appears both young and strong (like a refreshing spring breeze). This happens because all the illnesses accumulated over-time, are gradually (and permanently) eradicated from the mind and body. White hair turns black, and new teeth replace old teeth. With such accomplished individuals, the ageing process either stops completely, or slows significantly to being virtually undetectable.
It is clear that the methodology and techniques associated with Daoist self-cultivation emerged over a long period of time, and were the product of many years of experimentation and refinement. Practical experience has been the driving-force behind the building of a Daoist method that rejuvenates the mind and body. As ‘Daoism’ as a distinct body of knowledge developed within the context of Chinese history and culture, it cannot be separated from this reality, although it is true that Daoism is the culmination of the integration of many different mind and body preservation and development systems, found exclusively within China. Only after this forging process was complete, did the ‘nei dan’ technique become apparent, and was able to be practised, preserved and passed-on. Now it can be truthfully stated that the Daoist method of ‘Life Essence Mind-Body Self-cultivation’ (性命双修 – Xing Ming Shuang Xiu) – which contains the ‘nei dan’ teaching – has spread all over the world, and is no longer limited to just China. For those individuals who are truly and profoundly interested in Daoist self-cultivation, this precise methodology offers a genuine path toward self-development that does not deviate from the authentic Daoist teachings.
The Qianfeng (千峰) – or ‘Thousand Peaks’ – Pre-Natal School (先天派 – Xian Tian Pai), which can also be referred to as the ‘Earlier Heaven’ School, was developed during the latter Qing Dynasty and the Early Republican Period. Simply stated, the Qianfeng School is a modern version of the ‘Dragon Gate’ (龙门 – Long Men) School, the genuine lineage of which was inherited by my great grandfather Zhai Bichen (赵避尘) – who was the founding Patriarch of the Qianfeng School. Zhao Bichen’s Daoist name was ‘Yi Zi’ (一子) – which can mean ‘number one son’, or ‘number one disciple’ – and he was the 11th Generation (Outside the Temple) Long Men School Lineage Descendant, and was fully empowered to teach and innovate. Zhao Bichen was of the opinion that the old system of only passing-on Daoist lineages to only a small group of select disciples was out of date, and detrimental to the development and survival of Daoist methodology. This is why he founded the Qianfeng School and changed the teaching policy to include all living beings without exception. This meant that young and old, married and single, lay or monastic – could all become disciples and fully participate in the methods of Daoist self-cultivation. Although Zhao Bichen respected and understood the old method of a single transmission per generation, he also understood that in this modern-age, a different approach was needed. Everyone should be able to learn regardless of social status (i.e. rich or poor), and become healthy through Daoist practice. In this way Daoism could become popular without being exclusive or overly mercenary. If Daoism could spread throughout the people through proper teaching and guidance, then more people could understand and preserve its methodology and ensure its survival.
The Qianfeng School, from its inception, has always respected Zhao Bichen’s wishes and continued to make the authentic Daoist teachings available to the common people, without losing any effectiveness or traditional knowledge. Zhao Bichen taught that the old and the new must be integrated in such a manner that preserves the old and yet simultaneously makes these ancient teachings perennially relevant to modern times. Daoism is spread – yes – but it is not watered-down and is unaffected by the corrupting influence of money. Today, I (Zhao Ming Wang) am the great grandson of Zhao Bichen, and my family still occupies the house lived in by Zhao Bichen. We maintain the ‘Qianfeng Hermitage’ as part of our living complex, and for over a decade now, I have been officially leading the Qianfeng School full-time. There has been a transmission of authentic Daoist teaching to at least 200 people in that time and the mission continues without a pause. The Qianfeng School does not discriminate between rich and poor, but rather relies upon the inherent virtue of all those who seek instruction. In this way, reality is transmitted to all without question.
In recent times, Gan Zhang (甘长) of Malaysia and Guo Shengtong (郭胜通) of Indonesia – both diasporic Chinese people – have been diligently practising Qianfeng Daoism ‘at a distance’, but recently paid a visit to the Qianfeng Hermitage in Beijing, to gain an in-depth understanding of the correct method by receiving expert guidance at the source of the lineage. These two ladies were invited to the Qianfeng Hermitage because they possess a serious and respectful attitude toward the Qianfeng tradition, and are suitable for the profound teaching especially designed for lay-practice. Today, thousands of Qianfeng initiates (both men and women) are spread throughout the world, and teach others the foundations of this lineage. This is an excellent way to propagate the teachings of the Qianfeng School. However, the Qianfeng School respects all authentic (and virtuous) lineages of Daoist self-cultivation, and all teachers and their disciples are welcome at the Qianfeng Hermitage to participate in an equal exchange of Daoist knowledge and wisdom.
