How Long Will You Live?

(Translated by Adrian Chan-Wyles phd)
Broadly speaking, human life is divided into four phases; childhood,
adolescence, middle age, and old age. Human
existence is limited, and young children have the tendency of crying about
everything as they grow toward adolescence and adulthood. As they mature, they are taken with their own
dreams and ambitions, and strive for far-off distant goals. In the ensuing years, many achieve their
goals, and their life looks successful when they look back, but soon middle age
and old age arrive. As many are consumed
by stress, lust and greed, and their bodies prematurely age when they get to
middle age, they often develop physical and psychological illnesses, and many
die relatively early as a consequence.
Knowing this, can we still live to an old age? Well, without good
health, nothing can be achieved.
In the past, China used to be referred to as the ‘Sick Men of Asia’, but today, after our nation’s victory, we have become successful and affluent. As living standards have improved, it is now important to take care of the healthy functioning of the body. That being the case, why is it many still pay little attention to their own health? Whether you practice Confucianism, Buddhism, or Daoism, there is ample scope to develop your health through the study of the Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic, which is an excellent presentation of traditional Chinese medical thinking. Regardless of what philosophical path you prefer, Chinese medical thinking can benefit you. My view is that the ‘health, longevity, and mind-body development’ method of Qianfeng Daoism is one of the best methods for people to use to benefit their health. This was developed by my great grandfather – Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) – who was the 11th generation descendent of the Longmen (Dragon Gate) School of Daoism. He developed the Qianfeng Prenatal School of Daoism, and he did this by integrating Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism. This inclusive approach inspired him to write his manual entitled ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’. His elder brother – Zhao Kui Yi – wrote the ‘‘Three Character Law Summary Classic’. These books were designed to disseminate authentic Daoist knowledge about health and longevity self-cultivation to the furthest possible audience, so that humanity can benefit from this rare and ancient authentic Daoist knowledge and wisdom.
