Greed, Desire and Excessive Sexuality

As human beings, we should be afraid of excessive greed in
the mind and body, because such a strong and negatively powerful force is like
a snake swallowing all things without end.
The path for human existence should be one of joy and happiness, as
excessive greed traps humanity in a cage of its own making. Desire in the mind creates a day and night
obsession with seeking and making money which is mistakenly thought of as being
right. The undisciplined mind jumps from
one thought to another with delusions of grandeur - or dreams of celestial-like
power gained through greed, but this is an empty dream, from which everyone should
awake. Excessive indulgence in sexuality
(such as in adulterous affairs) not only damages the physical body, but also
diminishes one’s sense of worth and self-respect. An individual choosing to live in such
dangerous circumstances is often over-whelmed with damaging emotions. When there is a family (or appropriate
grouping), there exists quite naturally many responsibilities, and I would
advise every respected enquirer not to lose sight of what really matters in
human relationships, which is of course, the maintaining of respect and performance
of duty.
The three concepts of greed, desire, and excessive sexuality have been part of human existence from the very beginning. Human history contains many stories explaining how these concepts have brought-down individuals and societies, and have inflicted much shame upon the world. This is also why there exists many spiritual teachings advocating the control of human desire as a means to prevent such catastrophes from happening. Daoist self-cultivation advocates the attainment of a pure mind free of desire – and free of the very idea of desire – but few people attain this exalted state today. Money can be used in modern society, but it must be used in the right way that does not inspire, support, or encourage destructive greed and desire. Greed is essentially a highly potent and destructive source, and should be avoided at all costs.
The Daoist texts clearly state that by uprooting greed, desire, and excessive sexuality, the qi energy is optimised. When the Qi energy flow is strengthened in the body, this builds both essential nature (jing), and spirit (shen). Obviously when this is known, the path of excessive desire is definitely not the path to travel if you want to build health and prolong life. Our allotted lifespans are very short, but we do possess the ability to take care of ourselves (and others) through correct Daoist training. This is why I invite you all to my home – the Qianfeng Hermitage in Beijing – where we can talk together and discuss the cultivation of the Dao whilst drinking tea. Together we can clear-up confusion and untie the knots of delusion.
