Greed and Profit Do Not Lead to Health or Longevity

All lineages of Daoism advocate the cultivation of good
health, longevity, and mind-body development.
This is particularly true of the Quanzhen (complete reality) School, and
its perfection of the use of transforming the mind (and body) through the
attainment of ‘stilling’ all thought (and the realisation of emptiness). The problem today is that there are a number
of people who are not qualified, and who teach what little knowledge they have
about Daoism for a price. These type of
people offer quick fixes and promise Immortality in a short time. Their claims are as bizarre as their methods,
and as a consequence many otherwise sincere practitioners are led astray.
The Quanzhen School developed an important branch known as ‘Longmen’ (Dragon Gate) School, and this school was founded by Ancestor Qiu. From generation to generation, the Quanzhen Daoist teachings about health and longevity were transmitted, and eventually inherited by Ancestor Qiu. This lineage was passed to the founder of the Qianfeng Prenatal School – Zhao Bichen (1860-1942) – who was the 11th generation inheritor of the Longman lineage. He was also known as ‘Yi Zi’. Prior to founding our family school, he travelled widely and suffered much to acquire authentic Daoist knowledge. In fact he studied with at least 36 different Daoist experts and masters before his own attainment of Immortality. Eventually he met and paid respect to the 10th generation Longmen teacher known as Master Kong Le, and was accepted as his student. Zhao Bichen formed the Qianfeng Prenatal School around his understanding gained over many years, of authentic Daoist health, longevity, and mind-body building exercises known as ‘xingming shuangxiu’. Two books of academic and practical importance are Zhao Bichen’s ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’ (xingming fajue mingzhi), and Zhao Kui Yi’s ‘Three Character Law Summary Classic’ (san zi fa jue jing). Zhao Kui Yi was Zhao Bichen’s brother and his book was greatly endorsed by my great grandfather.
To put it frankly, a true Daoist master does not charge money for his or her teaching, and a true Daoist student does not pay for instruction. Why is this the case? This is because the true ability to heal others and guide them in their self-cultivation cannot be achieved through the agency of greed and the search for monetary profit. Such a relationship is corrupt and not of the Dao. In reality, it all comes down to a master being properly qualified in the Daoist teachings (and therefore truly able to teach), and a genuine student possessing a virtuous and morally good character. Together, these attributes create a channel of respect through which the Daoist teachings flow from master to student without blockage or hindrance. True study is not tuition based. A good teacher always sets an example for the student to follow at all times and in all places, and reveals each stage of the path at exactly the right moment the student requires it. In return for this consideration, a good student puts into practice each stage of the teaching, and slowly builds a sound knowledge of Daoist health, longevity, and mind-body teachings. Enlightenment and Immortality are not easily attained and take a long time of dedicated practice to acquire. There are definitely no quick fixes on this path of virtue and respect that integrates the best elements of Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism.
