Experiments in Daoist Longevity

Recently, I (Zhao Ming Wang), as the lineage inheritor of the Qianfeng Prenatal School of Daoist self-cultivation, have been engaged in a study of the effects of the natural physical environment upon the mind and body, and how different life-circumstances impact health and longevity. To this end I visited one of China’s six counties famous for the longevity of its people, namely Kuan Dian County (宽甸县 – Kuan Dian Xian), situated in Liaoning province (辽宁省 – Liao Ning Sheng), which is in northeast China. Here, the mountains and the valleys are beautiful to behold, places where the water that flows through the land is fresh and the air is clean. This is a perfect place to cultivate the ancient Dao. A perfect example of this balance of nature is to be found in the ‘Green Mountain Valley’ (青山沟 – Qing Shan Gou) area.
Another example of a harmonious landscape is the area known as ‘Divine-sky Bridge Valley’ (天桥沟 - Tian Qiao Gou), a conservation area which has extensive plant life and a number of forests. It is because of this perfect balance of the forces of nature (i.e. yin and yang), that the area has become known for people living incredibly long lives of a hundred years or more. The most famous and oldest of which is the Elder Mr Ruan Guo Zhang Lao (阮国长老) who is recorded as being born in 1760 and dying in 1924 – this made him 164 years old at his passing. While I was there, I visited a number of people who were one hundred years old or more explaining that I represented the Qianfeng School of Daoism, and asked them about their life experiences, and whether they followed any particular method.
Whilst in the area, I gather the various herbs associated with health and long life that were growing naturally on the mountain of Kuan Dian. In fact the area is a treasure-trove for natural remedies and hundreds of different herbs can be found. On ‘Divine-sky Culture Mountain’ (天华山 – Tian Hua Shan), I met with a Daoist priest and we exchanged our knowledge and experience of cultivating the Dao for the benefit of humanity. We agreed that environment is a factor to take into consideration when training, and that a peaceful setting is good for self-cultivation of good health and prolonged life, but we also agreed that without dedicating ourselves to a diligent practice of a correct method, results will be limited. The outcome of our discussion was that the effects of a perfect environment should be maximised by the practice of a correct self-cultivation technique.
