Do Not be Swayed By Praise or Blame

Chinese New Year is nearly here and 2010 has passed and became history for us all. On behalf of the Qianfeng Prenatal School, I want to wish you a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year 2011! I particularly would like to thank Mr Han Fengdao (韩凤道) the President of the Shaolin Painting and Calligraphy Institute, for providing their expert skills in providing a new sign containing the stylised Chinese characters for ‘Qianfeng Prenatal School’ (千峰先天派 – Qian Feng Xing Tian Pai), and the following Qianfeng disciples Tian Jie Zi (天杰子), Tian Wu Zi (天午子), Tian Shi Zi (天士子), Tian De Zi (天德子) and Tian Hua Zi (天华子), all of whom offered an invaluable service in recording and editing the inner teachings of the Qianfeng School. Furthermore, during 2010 many Qianfeng disciples have worked hard and diligently in their self-cultivation practices, and as a consequence, have made very good progress in their attainments of the Dao – to these students I send my sincere congratulations!
In 2011 we must look back at the past so that we ensure that we do not make errors in our self-cultivation training in the present. This does not mean that we should be stuck in the past, but rather follow the timeless aspects of the great masters and learn from their practice. For instance, beginners have a tendency to perform self-cultivation whilst sat in meditation, but as soon as they stand-up and walk around, their minds and bodies are no longer disciplined and at peace. The ancient masters showed that whether sitting, standing or lying, whether awake or asleep, the mind and body must be appropriately disciplined and a practitioner should not be swayed by either ‘praise’ or ‘blame’. The mind is held both firm and still - this is how suffering is transcended. A Qianfeng practitioner equally develops simultaneously the inner and outer qigong practices. The inner and outer self-cultivation techniques rely on each other for their existence, like fire relies on wood for its fuel – the two cannot be separated – despite their often different and precise functions. The mind and body have an inner and outer aspect that is inherently linked at its source, and so logic dictates that both must be developed together, even if one type of exercise seems to give precedence to one aspect or other at different times in the training. In the end all is balanced and harmonised in the realisation of Immortality. This is why it is considered impossible to have the inner without the outer, and the outer without the inner.
The outer body must be relaxed, disciplined and strengthened through external self-cultivation. This allows for the inner body to be relaxed, disciplined and strengthened so that the qi energy can flow through the qi energy channels without hindrance. This strengthens the qi energy flow that when focused through the concentration of the mind, cultivates the essential nature (jing). This leads to the development and clarification of peace and tranquillity in the mind (and body) which is called spirit (shen). What must be understood is that guidance is needed at various times in the training, and I want people to understand that I am here to help in any way and at any time, this is not a problem to me as I want to follow the example of my great grandfather Zhao Bichen and teach everyone for free. Never be afraid to ask me any question to gain the knowledge you need to progress. The ancient Daoist master have said that ‘If in your self-cultivation you make even the slightest error, you will be thousands of miles away from the true destination.’ If you have any doubts about what you are doing, please contact me at any time of the day or night and I will help you. As this is a new year – I wish all Qianfeng practitioners a successful and happy year ahead!
