Daoist Self-Cultivation Attracts Westerners of All Ages

On August the 31st, 2013, Tian Ma (Chinese name: 天马)
came to visit me at the Qianfeng Hermitage from the Netherlands. This is a country in Western Europe that is
not far from the United Kingdom (UK). Tian
Ma made this journey of thousands of miles because he has a sincere wish to
study authentic Daoist self-cultivation techniques that boost health, preserve
life, and develops the mind and body. As
Tian Ma does not speak Chinese, Dr Zhang Qingsong (the President of the
American Society of International Chinese Wisdom), was especially invited to
this meeting. Dr Zhang is fluent in both
the English and Chinese languages and was able to act as a translator so that
we could all communicate and understand one another.
Dr Zhang is very knowledgeable in the theory and philosophy of the Qianfeng School of Daoism, and is able to convey the Chinese concepts into exact English explanations that avoid misunderstandings, and because of this, it did not take long before Tian Ma had received all the important and foundational Qianfeng teachings, before coming to see me in Beijing. Tian Ma is 35 years old, and has been interested in the practice of Chinese martial arts (Wushu), Taijiquan, and Western Boxing, etc. He remembers listening to friends discussing Daoist self-cultivation, and this motivated him to purchase two different versions of Zhao Bichen’s manual entitled ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’.
After becoming familiar with the teachings of Zhao Bichen, Tian Ma appreciated the profound nature of Daoist self-cultivation, and decided that he would deepen his understanding of the principles underlying ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’. This is when he emailed me (the lineal descendent of Zhao Bichen) a number of times at [email protected] explaining to me about his interest in Qianfeng Daoism, and seeking genuine knowledge about this important aspect of traditional Chinese culture as practiced in modern China. Tian Ma is a sincere seeker of the Dao, and when he became a Disciple in the Qianfeng Prenatal School, he considered it a great honour. His trip to Beijing had a very important significance, as it gave him the means to dedicate himself to Qianfeng practice with a renewed vigour. This is good, as I am aware that many Western people now have a deep admiration and respect for Chinese culture, and I advise them to contact me and visit China.
I explained that the Qianfeng School originates from my great grandfather Zhao Bichen, who was the 11th generation descendent of the Longmen School. The Longmen School is a branch of the Quanzhen tradition of Daoism. Zhao Bichen wrote the book entitled ‘The Secret Cultivation of Essential Nature and Eternal Life’, as a means to spread authentic Daoist knowledge across the whole of China, and through all social classes. Since that day, this manual has been translated into many different languages in the West, and this has introduced many Westerners to Qianfeng Daoist teachings. This explains why in recent years, the Qianfeng Hermitage has received many emails and telephone calls from many foreigners around the wold, including places like Brazil, Africa, France, Canada, the UK and many other places. Every one of these people have read the above book, and are now seeking a more personal or direct instruction in practical matters that have arisen during their Daoist practice of self-cultivation.
In China today, the living conditions are rapidly rising, and the ideas of good health and longevity have become very popular. However, in modern China, not everyone understands traditional Daoist teachings, and certainly do not understand how the lineage system works. Grand Masters exist everywhere nowadays, each of varying depth of realisation, and each representing different branches and lineages of Daoist systems. Genuine masters are not taken with the external world but retain the essence of the Dao in all situations – these people I consider genuine Grand Masters. It is difficult to self-cultivate in the Dao if you do not access to genuine teachers who know exactly what you should do, and when you should do it. If you run into a self-cultivation problem during your training, how are you going to understand the energy flow and its situation? Self-effort is useful, in fact it is essential, but you also need to learn to understand who you can approach for genuine guidance, and who you cannot. Develop understanding in how to discern genuine Daoist teachers, and do not rely on yourself all the time. Find a genuine Daoist lineage to assist in your self-cultivation.
Daojia, Qianfeng Prenatal School Lineage Inheritor.
